...reg/rec and side stand switch problems

Ive just fitted a new battery and a 2nd hand reg/rec from an yamaha r6 , it was a nice day,so i got kitted out and decided to go for a spin,to make sure everything was ok.

Problem is i didnt get far...well actually i didnt get anywhere, the bike started first press of the button, but when i selected 1st gear to take way, the bike stalled ...and again when i tried it ,and again

Before i brought it out of my garage , i did notice the side stand light wasnt on with the ignition, but thought it must be a bulb, as i was sure nothing i had done regarding fittin the yamaha reg/rec could affect the side stand switch

Anyway...i took off the switch and cleaned the terminals,.. no result , so decided to take switch apart , i punched the centre part out of the round switch housing, and there is a wee "c" shaped part which seems to be under spring tension,these small springs are underneath it and are only roughly 3mm long by 2mm wide, (3 springs)so i tried stretching the wee fookers,and reasembled the switch.

TBH i dont think the switch is meant to come apart ,but anyway ,it works now and the side stand light comes on,and i can select gear without bike stalling.

Is there a connection between reg/rec and side-stand switch ,is it something ive done ,on searching the forum there is a chap(tempest) who had the exact same problem after fitting a reg/rec

Anyway ,not sure i could trust the switch now,or its waterproof abilities after me splitting it apart ,luckily ive just managed to get one off ebay for a few quid

A bit of a strange one Stevie I agree. I remember that happening to Tempest at the time.

I can't really see it has got anything to do with what you did. The only difference with the Yam's rectifier than the Storm's regarding the wiring iirc, is the live is on the opposite side, but no doubt you followed the wiring chart link from here anyway. I take it you checked the charging output across the battery terminals after fitting the new battery and rectifier,

im getting 12.55V across battery terminals with the engine off (new battery),and 14.28V across terminals at tick-over with 2nd hand Yamaha r6 reg/rec . I increased revs a bit to 5k revs , it still stayed around 14.28V ,does that sound ok?

EDIT..just checked the charging system checker post in the Knowledge Base on the forum, http://www.electrosport.com/technical-r ... iagram.pdf
it says if voltage stays below 14.8V at 5k revs the charging system is working fine,so it would seem everythings ok

Sounds like one of those things Stevie, bit of an unlucky coincidence.

Look at it this way, it happened at home, not out on a ride and you are a better man for it as you now know how the sidestand switch internals work Or would if you hadnt ripped em apart

Heres the internals.....you can see the wee springs which i stretched to make the switch work again

I'm I right in thinking we are looking at (1st pic) the heads or ends of the springs (5off) They must push against the C shaped piece of metal as in the second pic

PS. Just had another look. I now think there are 3 springs, the other two holes are for locating pins/dowels or fixing screws.

That's correct Chris, it is indeed just 3 small springs ,and they are fookin tiny , but i stretched them a bit and it worked fine, but then i saw one on ebay for £5 so bought it .
At least ive got a spare now

yeah way to go, a new sidestand switch and loom is £49 !!! Im surprised you didnt damage it hacking it apart, might have a go again ..

Geordie ,i just held it over an open vice ,and punched the middle part out with the end of an appropriate sized bolt. (Rough as buggery ,i know) lol

There was no visible damage after reasembly ,i just wasnt sure about the waterproof abilities ,then saw a cheapo £5 switch on ebay and went for it
