My VTR 1000 Firestorm

Post by mrfixit34 »

I have a VTR1000Firstorm R Reg 1998 I've only had it 2 months :( , Well here goes!! . I was riding back from willingham woods and my oil light flickered also my fuel warning light flickerded (nowt new there lol), so the next day I set out on the bike to get some oil, on the way the bike started to miss fire as if it was running out of fuel, so I kill switched it and free wheeled to the petrol station, after that I set off again and after around 1 Mile the engine stoped just as I pulled the clutch in. I managed to start it again and found that if I kept the revs bellow 3K it was ok any higher it started to miss fire and knock, so I rode home around 2 miles and parked it up till I got new oil and filter, but its ot got any better, when its cold it runs ok up to around 5k Revs but then soon as it warms up even on tick over 1K it randomly has a knock sound, so I'm throwing it out there.
So my question is Does anyone think the crank has worn and if so would I be able to put new crank shells in?
Also I removed the cam cover and turned it over to see if the oil was getting to the top and it is, so I'm positive It didnt take the oil pump out.
The knock noise is from the bottom end, as I used my friends stethascope nd listened and when you put it on the oil filter area is clear as a bell (the knock) and at the top next to the cams it sounds silky smooth.
Many thankxxs  :biggrin

Well my 2p worth is as follows
The miss fire and knock is probably the jets in the carb are blocked just strip them and give them a good clean
Chances are the crank and bearings are ok get your oil pressure checked if the oil pressures ok then the bearings are ok
If the oil pressure is low the bearings have worn
There a plain bearing i.e. a steel shell with a lead/tin coating that makes up the bearing surface the lead and tin is very soft and takes the brunt of any damage as long as it hasn’t worn down to the steel liner the crank should be ok
Bearings are about £10 each from Dave Silvers so its not to costly a job to change them
Just make sure the bearings are in the sealed Honda bags when you get them
Have a look here

I agree with Warby, I doubt the big end bearings are gone, unless as he says for some reason the oil pressure had dropped significantly, or when you added oil to the engine it took loads to bring it back up in view on the level indicator inspection window :?:

Let us know how much oil it took :!:

Definitely worth getting the oil pressure checked as Warby also said.

It sound more like an electrical problem to me though, I.E. an ignition coil breaking down or similar.
