Fork Seals Popping

Post by B120CR »

Hi all. About a month ago I replaced 1 fork seal coz it had blown, using pattern (vesrah I think) Due to the age difference in oil I changed the other fork seal and for a while the bike felt like it was on rails.
Recently, about a week, the original seal that blew has gone again. This morning the other fork-leg seal has blown to. :x
I have re-ordered genuine seals and will try again but wonder why I am back to square 1(?) I pumped the fork to expel any air and like to take my time doing things as the book says. I used the same grade, 10, oil and topped upto just over 130mm from top of fork top.
From re-building my motorcross bikes in the past, there was a bleed screw which I used to open-up every now and again to expel any air pressure build-up.
Do I need to do this or is there something else Ive missed or done wrong?
Ive considered buying new internal bushes but have put alot of cash into my bike recently and I think this is just being a bit anal about buying more new shiny parts.
As far as I can tell the stansions are not bent, pitted, nor did I damage the seals during fitting.
Any ideas please people? Thanks a lot.
Will soon be sporting a pair of 'VTR1000.org' stickers in appreciation! :D

Ive checked the original invoice but there is no ref to part/type reference, E-bay transaction, VTR1000F 97-03. Fingers crossed some genuine one's will sort out my headache.
Not worth trying to save a penny when pattern goes wrong & I'm spending again, Doh!

Hi mate, read this http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... als#p85115

i bought genuine Honda ones and the leaked like buggery ,i then ordered ebay ones,...they turned out to be made by the same manufacturer ,they leaked also....................the ones Honda dealer supplied me with only had one tension spring fitted on each oil seal ,but the ones that i removed from the bike had two tension springs fitted ,ie one on top and one on the underside of each oil seal.

Hope thats not your problem, but i needed the seals with 2 springs, only then were my forks oil tight.
With my forks dismantled ,the seals with the one spring were much looser when fitted over the fork tube ,than the seals with the two springs.

Okay,
after you've checked out Stevies post here's a quick check you can do be for replacing the striction surfaces.
Lift the front wheel and remove it from the bike.
Grab the bottom of each fork and see if they move about. It should have a solid feel to it and not feel as if there is sideways movement between the fork lower and stanchion.
If it does then replace the friction materials
