Starting From Cold

Post by Cookie »

Recently part exchanged a GSXR 600 for my 1999 Firestorm.
Having great fun with it but it can be a real pig to start from cold. Anyone else had this problem?

Welcome cookie,

Try checking the starter motor at the front of the engine, there is a cable with a rubber boot connecting it, pull back the boot and clean up the connector, after that grease it up and replace the boot.

hope this helps

Sounds too simple but make sure the battery is fully charged!
I've found it ensures quick starting.

But do check starter and main earthing cables etc.

Good luck and enjoy your new best friend!

Storm batteries can take a hammering and depending on how often the bike's used (especially during winter) you can kill one in 12 months or less. Mine got 'lazy' before it eventually died, sounds like yours might be doing the same. It's much more crucial on a big twin.

Thats the same way that works for me :P Push button, no throttle, pull out choke, and hey presto.
I think the B/F has typical inlinefour syndrome. Press button and keep winding the throttle untill something happens
That just wont work on a Storm.
Don't tell him Kaz. Just enjoy his ineptitude

KAZ

Kaz, when I first put ARTs on mine it backfired on the overrun, sounded great though.
But did you get new gaskets on the bit where the link pipes fit the standard pipe, bit of size difference and gas leakage.
Got some honda gaskets and it so far hasn't backfired.
Get more mpg too.................Paul

Kaz,
kept mine popping for ages, didn't seem to do any harm. But my wife didn't like the noise, she said it made the water in the bath wobble...
Changed back to standard for a while to keep the peace.
but bought the gaskets anyway and slipped the ARTs back on yesterday.
Will let you know if mpg improves with the gasket fitted. Paul

Cold start

Post by ktd001 »

Hi Kaz

Good advice on the choke. Tried it this morning and it finally got rid of the 'bucket of spanners' sound that I thought was compulsory!
My other half rides a Fazer600 at the moment but I'm trying to convince her to get a Aprilia Falco (not that I want to 'test' it for her of course!)
I ride way too fast to worry about cholesterol.

Very true, maybe we could get Al to change the colour scheme in here. Magnolia seems quite popular on all the room make over shows.
