Stuck engine mount bolt, please help!

Post by gilson »

I recently got a new engine and took a day off work to take the old one out. All was going well until the front engine mount bolt is stuck fast!

I've take off the bolt and the castle nut.

I've tried to use the allen key top loosen it off, but that's not rounded. It seems I need a new bolt, but has anyone got any idea how to get it out? I've been hitting the Sh1t out of it and stuck fast.. the others were OK.

The next step is to use some heat but tonight it will be soaked in WD40 and sulking in the garage after the severe verbaly tongue lashing I gave it about 10mins ago.

Any advice? And if anyone has a spare front engine mounting bolt with the castle nut and nut, I'd be happy to take it..

Probably too late but can you fire the bike up?

The engine heat will help.

If you're loosening engine bolts you've probably got too much disconnected, so it's out with the blowtorch, I'm afraid....

Looking at the Haynes, it seems that the bolt is threaded along its length, so after you've taken the castellated nut off you then need to unscrew the bolt using a hex key.
It's tightened to 69NM, so will need more than just an allen key to unstick it- how about a hex bar held in a socket with you socket set bar on it?

(BTW, they recommend leaving the rear one until last so that the engine can pivot down as the front's disconnected).

Good luck :plainsmile

Hi Timbo, that's what I'm going to have to do then. I've been using a plumbers torch, but it doesn't go anywhere near red hot. Oh well, I'll call my local mechanic tomorrow and borrow my mates van.

I need it out and the new one in by a week Tuesday as I'm going to Californian superbike school at Silverstone! ;-(I hope the gods are with me).

i can remember reading something about this a long time ago, and something sticks in my memory about the bolt being a left hand thread...i could be thinking about something else but it might be worth checking before you go to much further.

I took it to a local mechanic and he said that he's seen it before. When I was picking the frame and engine up it was swinging a little so it is moving. He recons he can get it out without bother.... hopefully anyway... I've ordered a new bolt, 20GBP from Dave silver all in... not bad...

I'm hoping he calls me today as it's a new business and he hasn't got a client base yet. Good for me as he's starting on it immediately.... please please please work....

That's exactly where he said it seized, in the actual engine rather than the frame... It's all done but it wasn't easy. He had to cut the bolt into three pieces to get it out.

I've got a very large pot of copaslip and will be using most of it as I put the bike back together.

I am really quite surprised how easy it's been (apart from the stuck bolt) to remove the engine. I was planning to have loads of bolts in various pots and problems with all the electric cables, but since I put the bolts back on I only really have a few for the footrest and clutch cover. The cables all stay put.

Now, putting it back together might be the issue!

I presume that I'll have to balance the carbs once all back together?

Might as well balance the carbs while you're getting greasy, and don't forget to check the valve clearance before you out the engine in.

You can see everything so much easier that way.

Thanks

Balancing the carbs.. never done it on a VTR. I'll see how it runs and take it to the local mechanic. Might even invest in a dyno run....

I remember when I put my Kwak ZX7r carbs back on, they had to be balanced.

Valves done recently, so no bother there.
