Do they all pop and bang on the overun?

Post by goody »

Put the standard pipes back on and the rattle seems to have gone. It popped and banged on the overun with the other pipes but I put that down to the hole where the chain had rubbed through. Can't feel any leaks with the originals back on but it is still popping is it normal?

Yes I think my Strom used to pop on the overun, I know the SP on std cans does. Well are we talking a nice little pop or a great backfire?

It's not too noisey I suppose. Think I must have a leak somewhere but changing down from highish revs it doesn't do it only starts when the revs get down to around 3 thou. I really need to get the bike serviced, shims checked, CCT's replaced new filters and plugs, carbs balanced etc. I'm going to put the Scorpions back on so I'll double check all the exhaust joints and see how she runs after that.

As you mention, if any of the exhaust joints are leaking then that will make it pop and bang on the over run more so. Also don't forget to check the joint that is quite often forgotten, and that is the one where the pipe goes through the swing arm. It's not that visible so easily over looked.

Getting the bike serviced is a good idea, especially if the carbs have not been balanced for sometime.

I'd agree with that Chris.

It's amazing how the tiniest of gaps can make the exhausts pop. If it's more a "crackle"/loud pop it might be the fuelling.

It was blowing at that join hidden by the swingarm swingarms out already to be cleaned up and grease all the linkages didn't find any horrors well except the rear pads halfway through the backing!

Greasing the swing arm and linkage bearings definitely well worth doing :!:

Mine doesn't Jim, has your bike had non standard cans on prior to it going back into the shop ?
Its just the twin rumble on the overun, certainly no problems that I can hear or see.

Got it back together today. High level pipes are on, sealed all the joints and used new clamps, no popping and banging now! New plugs air filter, oil, oil filter. Did the metal rod inside the cct thing. both are working ok. Could not budge that large blanking plug on the alternator cover so had to remove the cover to check the timing not ideal but even numerous attempts with the rattle gun couldn't shift it. valve clearances on the rear pot were fine, front ones will have to wait until I've got a bit more time. Need to get the carbs balanced, what are the symptoms of out of balance carbs?

Invoice from the dealer.

A bit more vibration, and not picking up that cleanly on small throttle openings, however you don't really notice them gradually going out of synch.

But you certainly notice the improvement once they're back in perfect synch. :D
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Goody,

That's all sounding good. It's a feel good factor when you put it all back together and it's working as it should, no exhausts leaks etc.

Tony said it on the balancing of the carbs. If it is out a lot you only really notice it once they're balanced.

I don't know if you already have a carb balancer, but I use one of these. Cheap enough but do the job:-

I think a mate at work has a set of balancers, if not those ebay jobbies look cheap enough.
Feel a bit more confident about using it now with the stoppers in the cct's. It's a definate cure for cct Paranoia! Back end of the bikes sorted now next month do the front change the fork oil, grease head bearings strip/ clean calipers new pads repaint front wheel and fork lowers.
It's been a while since I've looked forward to the ride to work might even get up early and find a scenic route!
