Mirror Extensions

Post by pariah »

This is my design for the above. I,ve made a template from wood dowl first to get actual size and dimensions. Now made, I got to get it made out of alloy or steel rod.

Once completed the original base mounting will still have the original rubber cover, where as the extension will be a rubber tube cut down to fit over extebsion join.
Will add pics when completed.

Why not stick with wood?

There's not enough wood on bikes these days, it's light, easy to source, and can be burnt at the side of the road if you break down in cold weather.

I'd like to see anyone try to light a fire rubbing two bits of carbon fibre together!

A nice balsa fairing would match it perfectly.

Or you could Whittle a jet engine!

Talking of matches, I'm currently making a 1:1 scale model of a tree out of matches.

Pariah.

Can I suggest you make that centre 'solid' section approxomately twice as long as it is now? That'll ensure really good rearward vision with no elbow intrusion.

LSM (with VTR mirror extenders fitted that work!)

the original piece started at 3inches. but when on the bike it made them stick out to far. So I,ve reduced the over all lenght and now the hole centre to centre in the picture has been reduced to 1 3/4 inches. This has moved the mirrors out by at least this much, also when on the bike they don,t stick out to far and still allows nearly full use of the mirrors.

Here is a pic of my first attempts to get some rearward view.
Known by my mates as the 'Big Ears' modification. They were effectively 75mm extra length (oooh err) :mad2

These are the ones I now use (+ a 25mm shaped 'block' under the mirror base and against the fairing) to give great rear vision.

This shows it all in position (before I added the 25mm shaped block)

Ah, mine are based on the same concept apart from when finished there will be no fixing showing at the join . This will allow me to cover with plain black rubber sleeve that will be pushed under the original mounting rubber. Then it should look like it,s meant to be like that.
If you could rerplace the exposed mountings the same way, you could apply this idea.
I will be using a heavy duty counter sunk screw from underneath that will screw into the threads created in the upper extension piece. This will hide any signs of a join when covered over.
yes tim, I agree on your point . As i.m not that bigger chap these will be fine for me, I think people will have to adapt to suit individual needs. TIm yh not fat your just big boned

Alternatively, just use cable ties to pull your jacket in at the elbow so that it's nice and snug.
Or Duck tape, in it's many forms.

Flappy jackets and waterproofs are the root cause of this evil phenomenon, IMHO.

BTW, those carbon aftermarket ones with indicators in just vibrate so that you can't see what's behind you anyway, and I've now just given up looking, to be frank.

So if it's you I've pulled out in front of, sorry.
