Anyone got any experience of GPS systems for their bike?

What are the popular/recommended makes & models, and how good are they?

GPS is something BMW supply as an option, maybe a BMW dealership could throw some light on it, maybe even a Honda main dealer (not a franchise).

There was a (very) long thread on the VFR forum about one of there members doing a round britian trip for charity. There's loads of pics he took along the way and one of them shows a Compaq PDA fixed up beside the clocks that he was using as a gps. Have a search in there, they seem a friendly bunch so sure they'd be happy to answer questions. Looking through e-bay, folk are selling off these systems starting about £200 upwards. Going down this route you wond be spending money on just a gps, you'll get all the other features that PDA's give you. Their also very good for playing Tetris on the train coming to work in the morning. :wink:

done a bit of looking around and the Garmin StreetPilot looks a popular model, but retails around £500. A bit of a luxury it seems.

who knows, maybe sometime.... 2005/6 a new Blackbirds coming out, could start saving now!

I've been looking into it as well! Initially for a GPS speed camera detector to swap between car and bike. 1st plan was a Nokia 6600 phone with a bluetooth GPS reciever and traffcam software (already got the phone and a bluetooth handsfree car kit which is excellent) then I find out there's sat nav software for the phone called Wayfinder but then find out the two software packs don't work together and trafcam only has British speed camera sites and as I'm off to Germany soon I'll probably go for a PDA/Palm type with a bluetooth GPS receiver, Tom Tom 3 voice navigator and most of the ones on Ebay come with camera software that work with the Tom Tom software. I don't know much about PDA/palms yet but have been advised to go for one with Windows based software.

If your going the pda/palm route i'd go for the pda. The compaq ipaq seems to be the market favorite, but most of the windows based ones are well catered for. I've got a palm tungston and theres not much, gps wise, available for the palm operating system. Theres a few on-line shops that specialise in in gps's, none of which i can remember. A google search should find them.

Have a nosey on this site http://www.totalpda.co.uk loads of PDA and GPS stuff at not bad prices ive got a PDA with TomTom 3 on and its good works well in the car but dont know how you would be able to use it on a bike :?:
