Rattle rattle dink dink

Post by goody »

Is the noise my new to me storm is making! I suppose the first thing to question is the CCT but it only make the noise on the move, blipping the throttle or revving it quite high whilst stationary it sounds sweet.
The pipes on it might not have been put on properly and the link pipe under the swingarm has a small hole in it where the chain has rubbed through, I thought this is what the noise was but the chain has been adjusted and doesn't seem to make contact. Anything else I could look at. The noise sort of comes and goes. the tensioners were changed 16,000 miles and 5 years ago so are due for replacement probably with manual ones or I might put a piece of rod in the current ones I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

CCT's normally give first signs of getting weak on the over run, from approximately 3,000rpm and down. IE. you usually notice it as you're changing down and slowing down for a junction or similar :!:

Would it make the noise when the bikes not moving? it is slowing down a pulling up junctions that I notice the noise but I'm wondering if as the weight transfers to the front the rear is raising up and making the chain slack enough to rub the link pipe. As the chain has worn a hole in the pipe I'm going to put the standard ones back on for a while and see if it goes away. I want to put manual cct's on it but APES seem a bit expensive and that truckinduc fella on the american vtr site never answers his emails. There's someone advertising on ebay who will make a pair for around £50 but he needs either a detail drawing or an old one.
Maybe a pair from Silvers is the easiest option.

The cheapest way to make sure that you don't damage the engine is to fit the little slugs inside the CCT's to stop the plunger retracting fully if the spring fails.
This prevents the chain jumping a tooth or two and sending the valves into the pistons.
You'll still hear it rattle, and can then fit new CCT's or replace the springs.

All it costs you is a couple of little bits of aluminium, or in my case, sawn-off bolt threads.

See the workshop threads for more details.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I'm going to order a pair of CCT's from silvers tomorrow. Theres a few jobs to do to it I going to take out the swingarm tonight and check all the linkages and give it all a good clean needs a rear disc as well. My mate used to wash it like it was a car polished the bodywork but just hosed off the rest of it. Adjusting the chain is about the limit of his spannering abilities.

Chain was touching the link pipe, fitted the slugs in the tensioners, still a slight rattle from from cam chain when warm, more noticeable on the overun slowing to a stop guess the front tensioner spring is weaker than the rear. the worst rattle was caused by a piece of broken mirror inside the left mirror head, sounded like a toy rattle. Still a few jobs to do, not sure whether to fit manual tensioners or go for new standard ones.

The water pump and oil pump both run off chains in the engine and can rattle if badly worn “unlikely but worth a listen”. Starter clutch can make a rattling noise to along with the clutch.
Try the screwdriver test use a long heavy screwdriver and hold it on the cylinder head the cylinder block then the right hand engine case put the plastic end to your ear and see where the noise is loudest.
Should narrow the area that’s making the noise down a bit
If it’s the CCT the noise should be loudest around the cylinder block area

my front tensioner rattles at 1400-1500 rpm then goes, then whines after that which appears normal i think, just seems to slacken at that point :?:
