Done timing which was a piece of cake after reading through instructions on the site
but discovered a bent valve arrghhh
stripping down the head now while the sun is shining

got both heads off front barrel inlet valves are slightly bent
and the rear head's exhaust valves are sticking out half inch lol
proper fubar !!

Don't worry about bike shop, it's an easy fix from here.
First, buy a Halfords Professional valve tool. They're about £40. Not much else fits properly, unless anyone else knows better?
Next, order a new pair of front ex valves and a head gasket.
Then just fit the new valves, during which you can scrounge a lift back to Halfords in the wife/GF's car to buy the valve paste set you forgot the first time you went.
Then lap the valves in until there's a nice grey band about 3mm wide in the valve seat.
Next, reassemble, and check the valve clearances once it's back in place.
This is M U C H easier if you remove the plastic heat shield under the carbs, because you can see the front head rather than having to poke around in the gloom between the front forks.
Then follow the Haynes calculation to find the shims you need, if it's a decent local bike shop they'll have an assortment in stock, some even do exchanges for your old ones.
Fit, check again, check timing again, and ride the bloody thing.

He needs a pair of exhaust valves as well. How much are four valves from Honda? Theres a secondhand rear head on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-VTR1000-VTR ... 7C294%3A50
as long as the inlet valves are interchangeable then it might work out cheaper.

Just looked on Silvers and the four valves would cost £68 so it's slightly cheaper to get a secondhand head. As long as the head is good then you could bolt that straight on and swap the front inlets from your old rear head to the front one (as long as they are interchangeable!).

My mate in the shop has said i can use all tools to fix the valves down there he will show me what to do
so all i have to do is pay for valves was tempted to buy another set of heads / barrels just as long as they are not in the same condition as mine as ebay can be hit and miss sometimes .
I may send that bloke on ebay a question may be a cheaper fix all round
