VTR ICM unit

Post by Phil-VTwin »

Having seen Squiffy's posting about the convertor unit has started me thinking about the ICM unit, has anyone taken one apart to see what electronics are in there? i.e. what device holds the ignition map and can it be changed for a custom one?

I wonder if they are basically a large heatsink affair set in, as you say, resin or something for ultra waterproofing?!

Ahhh thought they might be filled :(

There may be upto 200+ different entries in the map that would be based on 500 rpm steps from 1000 to 9500 and a number of points of reference for the load sensor, i.e. TPS

Electronics is one of my hobbies so i do like to play :wink2

For those who hate electronics and invisible forces that can kill you what does the load sensor do?

Could you technically remap it? i assume its a binary code stored on a chip, so in theory if you had the right interface to connect it up you could do that?

It depends on the components in the unit and if they can be identified but technically yes it can be re-programed.

the best way to explain the 'load' sensor is the chart below, the unit doesn't measure load as you know it, it measure the position that the throttle is in.....

this is from 1000 to 2500 rpm and throttle position from closed to full open, the figures are the BTDC ignition points

......00 25 50 100
1000 15 18 20 30
1500 15 22 25 32
2000 15 25 28 35
2500 15 28 32 38

So, you cruising at 2K on half throttle and the timing is at 28, open to full and it changes to 35 to allow smooth pickup.
