Engine probs

Post by jackVTR »

Hi all

Well thought all was well riding to work this morning, how wrong i was gona be.

Got half way their and with no warning heard a banging noise from the front of my bike it soon got very loud and then the engine cut out over a space of 100meters

It started back up but cut out straight away, it sounds like metal Grinding and banging.

Engine has oil,and their is no sighn of crack's or leaking oil.

As for the so called breakdown cover.thats in my wifes name, wanted to know if she was their as its for her, after me saying she had just gone home, they put it down as not with vechl, and unable to send recovery,
So at 2 in the morning i lost the plot with them, saying thank you for your help in leaving me in the middle of nowhere and no way of getting home,
They just said Good night sir

Had to get a lift home from a pal (Cheers Ged)and leave the bike by the side of the road,

If any one live's nr or in Frome with a trailer or a means for picking a bike up giz a shout and PM me

So
As its a V-twin i have no idea where to go to get it looked at and i dont wona think of the cost

Is their any one out their thats worked on v-twins ,that could have a look or even work on it, to keep the cost down

No more riding for me untill its fixed or sold for parts coz i canny aford the repair

I'm with Timbo on this, I'm afraid it does sound as if the front CCT has given up :(

If you own a socket set you can fix this.
It'll cost around a hundred quid and then it'll be good as new.

The CCT will have failed, allowing the cam chain to jump two or more teeth on the (usually) exhaust cam sprocket and the piston will have touched the exhaust valve pair and bent the stems enough that they won't seat.
Chances are that once you get the head off all you'll need is a pair of new exhaust valves, new shims (you can get the local dealer to do that bit before you put the head back on) and a head gasket.

You'll know if that's all it is by taking the head off. Lots of info in the workshop thread about how to do this, and re-time the cam chain afterwards, which is easy to get 180 degrees out.

Worst case? all four valves bent, I've not known a holed piston so it's always rebuildable.

Others will add their stories, but that what's happened to mine, several times now.

Good luck, and don't rush the rebuild.

Otherwise, I'll give you £50 to clear it off your drive
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Ahh like vultures around the dying man we swoop.......

I'll take the hump and the belly pan or 500 for the whole bike??!!

Sorry, what was that? something "OFF!"

Seriously. Good luck.

I have a spare rear head left over from a recent rebuild if it turns out to be that.

Complete with valves and shims, and cams in good condition, you can still see the machining marks on the surface!

cheers guys for the info,,

I dont have the tools or space to get this done at home ,so i have got a pal to have a look at it, he has built loads of bikes maily all big v-twins
so hopfully he will know his way round a bike.

to that end would i be better of trying to get after market cct's fitted while the bike is striped down,

also where would be the best place to get them ..

Ok update on bike :(

The front cct has gone, and as my friend wanted to see if the motor turned with rotating the rear wheel,he had taken out the spark plugs and noteced the front one's tip had been bent..

he hasnt taken the head of yet but he and I are wondering if a valve has been damaged ,i guess untill the head is off we wont realy know..

Has anyone had this happen,

also does any one know of a good place to get valves and gasket's if needed ??
