Well after 8yrs the old Storm is really getting on my nerves.
Can't afford to change her so I need to try and get to the bottom of a very annoying rattle.
Every now and again I get a really loud rattle/knock but I can't really locate it, it appears to be from around the lower front cylinder (I think). It really only happens after engine braking so if I coast to a stop instead of coming down the box it ain't there. Really strange. The CCT's have been changed.
Does the wisdom of the forum have any ideas?
Thanks,
J

Re: Rattle/knock
As has been said check the CCT’s first just to be on the safe side
Also on the end of the left hand side of the crank there’s a spring loaded second cog on top of the primary reduction cog the one that drives the clutch this is to take up any backlash in the cogs if the springs have fails you’d be hearing them rattling about
There’s also a chain that drives the water pump there too
Could be either of these
big edit right hand side of the engine

Thanks Chaps,
The CCT's have been changed several times and I've just checked them again. The mileage is now 28,0000. I must have a look at the spring on the reduction cog that sounds like a possibility.

UPDATE
I've removed the subgear from the primary crank gear and there is wear on both the spring washer and the back of the sub gear. Could this be my problem? It kind of makes sense that if I only get the rattle after engine braking that the load on the primary gear is being reversed and perhaps the subgear isn't taking up the slack.
So anyone got a spare spring washer and sub gear??
I don't believe I can refit the sub gear without removing the clutch or can I?
