I'm feeling all pleased with myself!

Post by JIMMYJAMES »

Well as some of you will know i have had ongoing problems with a constant rattle coming from the clutch area which was driving me mad. I replaced the CCT's with manual and it made no difference but i feel better rideing the bike knowing they wont fail.

Over the last week or so when i could spare some time i took the cover off the clutch and the only thing i could see amiss was that the primary drive noise damper springs were not under tension. The manual said the clutch had to come to bits to enable me to get it apart and reassemble but i'm far from conventional.

I dismantled the mechanism leaving the clutch whole and noticed the vibration damper holes were not lined up at all, in fact they were one tooth out. I managed to move the damper 1 tooth clockwise so the holes lined up and the whole thing is tight as hell now with no play between the clutch and the primary pulley. It did take a lot of swearing but i found some well place dollups of grease and a very small screwdriver helped a lot getting all the springs in place.

I wouldn't have bothered creating a new thread for this but i am feeling all proud with myself for managing to do it, even though it took me an hour and a half of swearing reassembling it with nothing more than a head torch its still better than taking the whole clutch out.

Truth will tell on sunday when i re fit the cover and fill up the fluids as to weather the noise is still there or not, but everything else seems spot on in there.

Fingers crossed for me please for Sunday chaps and thanks for all the help :D

and well done on spotting the potential problem...........Guess it suggest that someone has been in there already and didnt put it back together properly?? is there signs of any work being carried out?

And good on you for managimg to re-set it without getting the clutch off......I bet you feel Hanibal from the A-Team............."Dont you just love it when a plan comes together"

It was a tad fiddly to say the least but i would have thought it would have taken longer if i had have taken the clutch basket off plus i would have needed a new clutch bolt. There is signs of damage on the casing where the basket looks like it might have come loose at some time but its all been repaired well, there is no wear on the basket fingers, the plates are all good and the needle bearing runs free and true. I will let you know if its better when i've got the rest of it together on Sunday.

Cheers for the update. Fingers crossed that was the problem, it certainly seems like a very good possibility to me.

Don't suppose there's any chance of a pic or two before you put it back together :?:

Yes mate, but there isn't much to see apart from whats printed already in the manual. I will take some nice close up big pictures tomorrow and post them up.

Here you can see the two holes on the vibration damper which now line up with the primary drive holes (Bottom right and left of the bolt).

Here you can see the marks on the clutch outer where there was obviously problems before.

Thanks bud  One question for you all though; How much movement should there be on the cush drive on the rear wheel? Mines got loads of slop in it and i suspect they will all need replacing. I only noticed today because i finally managed to get a paddock stand with cups on it. The previous owner must have let things slip with this bike me thinks, the head race bearings clunk under breaking too :( The MOT tester must have been blind to pass it.

The noise was probably why he stuck it on Ebay and was so keen to sell it to me so cheap. It has other minor problems that need sorting such as the cush drive and the head race bearings but all in all a 25k miles bike in really good condition for £1200 isn't half bad. Its got to be worth £1500 all day long if i came to sell it on. I just need some good weather now so i can go out and ride it :D

Well done, glad you got it sorted in the end.
See what a bit of perseverance (and a big hammer) can do? :D

See you on the road sometime.

Re cush drive, you shouldn't get much free movement at all.
David Silvers replacement sets are quite cheap and compared to what you've just done, an easy fix!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Tony's right, when the cush drive is in good condition there should not be any free play. A small amount of play can be shimmed out with shims cut from an old ice-cream container. Most definitely an easy job to do compared to what you have just accomplished.

Well i have had my first trial today since putting it all together and its awesome!!! Far smoother, the flat spot/carb cough has dissapeared and it even pulls better. Cant wait to give it a try in the dry weather :D Its amazing the difference having the wheels correctly aligned makes as well, it actually holds a line in corners without feeling like the bike is going to fall over. Smiles all round :D
