man ..

Why would one spend hundreds on exhausts if he's not using it. Plus doesn't an engine need firing up every so often to keep the oil circulating? You wouldn't do that in a closed room would you? Maybe the fumes have gone to his head?Geordie wrote:yeah that was my thoughts bit odd, each to their own i suppose ...
I just couldnt not take it out for a rip .. !
Agree about the seals, etc .. if youve ever had anything a bit old you'll know they need regular usage !
Interesting slightly unrelated story .. We have a telescopic forklift JCB all terain great machine. Bought it second hand with 6600 hours on clock maybe equivalent to 100000 miles i suppose, anyway had a bit of use but in overall good nick. We used it for a bit then decided to sort out one or two problems that we had noticed, including the revs not going any higher than 1500 when red line was at 2300. After much investigation and adjustments of various linkages and cable, it was discovered the reason was simply that shite had gathered below the throttle pedal under the floor from the front wheel. As this had built up over the years and not cleaned the travel available to the pedal was reduced. Not really too big a problem on these machines, as the engine drives essentially a big oil pump and more revs dont quite transfer into more speed quite the same as say a car .. Anyway, we cleaned all this away, and hey presto max revs up to 2300, sorted ..
NOT
Next day my old man had just arrived back in the yard and the engine was making all sorts of terrible noises, stopped straight away. Engineer out. As we were scratching our heads, i put my finger into the filler cap and felt the rockers. Instead there was slack vale springs .. immediatley i thought thats not right .. !! rocker cover off, 5 broken valve springs, sh1t. Head off, 4 smashed valves 2 mangled pistons and gouges out the head .. expensive !! youre not kindn .. Anyway what had happened was that the springs had been so used to operating at the reduced rate they had perhaps 'fatigue memoried' and when we cleaned the muck out they were then subjected to a higher or different stress pattern and couldnt handle it .. snap, valves drop, battered ... amazing the engine was running at all ..
ANyway, im blethering ..
