11.85 volts

Post by balls »

Just checking the output to the battery today and the most I was getting was 11.85 volts . 11.50 with the lights on and with no increase in voltage as the revs rose , methinks the r/r is on the way out ? :(

Yes I would say change it mate. Mine was similarly low and so did the old R/R as per beast's instructions with a 2nd hand R6 R/R off ebay and it sorted it right out. Can't remember what the output was exactly after doing it but it was plenty healthy and remained constant even at tick over. Had no probs with the battery since and starts pretty much on the button even when cold now.

Silly question:
Was the engine running or not?

Neil, I would test your multi-meter on your car or a neighbours first, just to make sure you are getting true figures. I scrapped two used car batteries once, before I realised the multi-meter was giving a false reading

If you still have the old un-finned rectifier then it's a good possibility it is on the way out, but from my experience most rectifiers that pack up cause the voltage to go above the 15.5 volt permitted level for the Storm. Also worth checking the connections on the rectifier as they have been known to get burnt.

Cupasoop put a good link for testing problems like yours here:-

Had a look at the r/r today oooh dear looks like it was on the way out the body was enlarged in places and it was leaking moulten insulation , the voltage a few minites before I took it off was 11.5 so fingers crossed it was undercharging . its off now will fit the r6 unit tomorow have managed to get the conectors out of the block intact so should be a simple job tomorow :D

Just testing
Sounds like you've found the culprit. Good luck with the new install
