Sprocket question.

Post by Jonesey »

A mate has offered me a 44 tooth renthal sprocket, but says it is best used with a 520 chain. Can it be used safely with a 530?
Any input appreciated. Chris.

Simple answer: No. If a 520 could safely be used with a 530 then no-one would bother making a 530 sprocket.

It'll physically fit, but i reckon that it would wear the chain in no time. And do you really want to be wondering when the chain will snap and take (if you're unlucky) a chunk out of yer leg and crankcases????

A sprocket is about £40 tops. it aint worth it IMHO

I agree with what's already been said, not worth the risk.

A new 43 tooth JT sprocket (correct thickness) from mandp is £20.99 + P&P.

It makes the bike pull a lot better for motorway riding, and if you have to drop a cog for an overtake, it's a lot quicker.
Downgearing is a different matter, and one I'd do on any bike I own (the blade has gone -1front, +2 rear)....after all, when do you need 170+ on the road. It now tops out at 155MPH, but is a lot livelier coming out of corners (as Timbo will justify as he has watched me disappearing into the distance Image Image)

Have a look onGearing Commander...it'll give you an idea of the changes to top speed and the chain length.

Hi Lads

Just got on the end of the gearing debate and in 11 years of owning me Storm, it had never occurred to me, but reading the content, it makes perfect sense. I guess it's easier just changing the rear sprocket as I seem to remember something about front sprocket changes affecting the speedo ?.

So my question is, would you go 42 or 43 tooth on the rear, assuming a standard front ?.

regards

I can confirm that :) My poor little ZRX was having its neck wrung to try and keep up, was the same following Jim when he had his standard blade but that didnt disappear quite as fast :)

I was mostly on half throttle Timbo :biggrin , I tried to stay in camera shot for a while to make it worth your time and effort. I can safely say that the 09 Blade does not need any alteration to the gear ratio (just stay in 2nd and 3rd :wink2 )

Funnily enough, I just read an article on the subject in Feb's PB mag....

Says much the same as the advice already given- yes, you can do it but the chain rattles around and wears really quickly. Lateral play wears the O or X rings out.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Right- I have now seen the sprocket and can see that it would be a bad move, I had no idea how skinny a 520 was!
I think I'll stick with my 530 43 tooth.
Cheers all, Chris.

Use the gear commander program, has the ratios already saved.
