If so , what is your front / rear sprocket ratios

4th gear is easier to control ?!
, the only way your up in fourth is if your shifting through the gears at 12 oclock, and you gotta be goin 150mph in 4th at least, to have "any" control, expecially with stock gearing , I have a 2000 superhawk 996 , jetted and piped with two brothers pipes, and a tooth in the front spocket , and third gear wont come up on flat ground, never mind 4th, and if it did i would have to be goin "real" fast to have enough tension to have good control. I can put it directly at 12/Oclk and ride it forever or up to about 100, 110, mph. Pete i just dont get what your sayn, unless you have a Y2K bike, in which case you would only have one gear. Fill me in on what your sayn here, if you can get it up and hold it in 4th with good control , im sending my bike back to Honda , cause IVE BEEN ROBBED !!

hi!
i didn't come on this discution board for a long time since i found the same in french (easier for me...)
Is this subject talking about wheelies?
Getting up in 3rd is possible without clutching up but as for me, you need to stand up on the rear foot pegs (i even manage it but not a 12oclock of course, just at 10oclock since i'm still afraid of this position)
i get it up in 2nd (don't use the clutch) with the standart front sprocket but change it in march for a 15ft sprocket to upgrade acceleration.
But when i see a friend doing wheelies in 900cbr full P in 3rd at 140 kmh/80-90mph, i wonder if how he do that. technique and practice with an adapted bike. he told me that he pack /compress front and rear to givea great impulsion (more efficient than the standart cutting off gas)...
my personal target isn't to stand up in 3rd, but to do 1km in 2nd... i hope to manage one day...
this friend is learning to take turns (not to short of course) in wheelies. he manage on a long turn near from 1km last week end. i didn't believed my eyes!
And you, have advise for me to help me in long wheelies, since you have the same bike than me?

hi RQ, i send you a private message when i came back on VTR 1000.org
But there are also very interesting information on the french discution board. the most of subject are technical and there are 2-3 men with much VTR technical knowledges! (easier to anderstand technical things in french...)
But still happy to speak on this board!

Hey, you can see my english is still far from perfection! Why would you want to go to a French VTR site, sure there would only be French people there..........

Hi ya BP
Long time no write
Glad you are back. If any subject was going to get you back we should have know it was wheelies.
Best I can manage is about 400m. The trick is to find the balance point so you dont have to accelerate very fast. If you are at the 10:00 position you are nearly there. Not very good at changing gear so I don't go for the big ones often. Yes second is much easier and the gears dont get stuck when changing to third(unlike between 1st and 2nd). Lots of preload on the rear suspention helps too(but crap for normal riding). Nice to know you are still doing it after your crash.
Ta Ta for now

The balance point... i can easely find it when i drive 2 on the bike, but when i'm alone, i'have to put my bike up very high to travel distance (as 400m the goo days...). My friends told me that it's easier to keep balance standing up on the pegs (rear or pilote pegs as everyone prefere). The first step to learn it is to get up the bike without fear and slowly step by step to balance point. After it's a question of practice to do 1 km ore more...
Not easy!
it 's the chance (hasard, coincidence) but not sure i have post a message if there had not been this subject. but i'm also interesting in driving fast! (i finished 27th / 125 bikers registered in rallye de la sarthe, an official competition i do once a year)
Furthemore i do less wheelies then last month...

2nd gear, drop and pop
I find the best way to do it is on the reg pegs, at about 3 1/2 4000rpms, in 2nd gear, give it one rev, drop the clutch, and stand at the same time, in the begining keep your body shifted forward slightly, and as you find the balace point slightly past 11 oclock, you get more and more comfortable, until its effortless. But keep your weight forward at first it gives you the security that your not going to go backwards , and in time pull the handlebars closer and closer to your body until they are almost agianst you, slightly below your chest. I can hold second gear for about a 1/4 mile at 70-90mph. I love goin up steep hills , you can really get up on your tippy toes and it feels like your 20 feet tall, and scaling a hill like nobody's buisness. The looks on peoples faces as they go by is priceless. The only thing that trully scares me is on the highway, somtimes you cant get the perfect balance point right away, so you get on the gas more, and I end up finding it when im up to like 90 mph , almost straight up, and im afraid that they gear is goin to end on me and the bike is goin to go backward and me with it. I cant get my foot even close to the brake or the shift standing up. so im always scared to wind out the gear, when i got the bike perfectly balanced, cause truthfully , im only ballanced because of the gear tension, if i ever burn out the gear, im wombles. Standing on the seat wheelies in second gear are acually surpisingly easy also, the position is better suited to balance your weight. You just jump up, tuck your feet in the groove in the rear of the seat, 2nd gear, rev, drop and pop, the only thing that sucks is banging your knees on the tank when you drop it. Ballanced wheelies are where its at though, power wheelies take very little skill and lack control. I got 7,000 miles on my new Hawk, and about 3000 are on 1 wheel, and i wonder why my front shocks are sponges. lol I gotta shut myself up now, i could talk about wheelies all day!

Hi thank you for this answer. i think i've all well anderstood. just "if i ever burn out the gear" i didn't find how to translate...
And i think that "im only ballanced because of the gear tension" means that your are slighty increasing your speed and just a little ° under the exact balance point (we can call that the security reserve...). A friend of mine with a 900cbr whom i saw many time doing more than 1 miles tell me that when your're in the balance point, you can slighty go over it (go after it) and the torque will get you forward if you cut off gas. For exemple, i even see him slowing down in wheelies (he slowed done fron130-140kmh to 110), and the rev dropped too.
I have to train myself on the pegs (will try on front and rear pegs to see the best for me). But i'm not sure to manage in a week and. I HOPE quickly! and safety!!!
"I gotta shut myself up now, i could talk about wheelies all day! " me too...

PS : i don't want to use clutching up to do wheelies, so it's a bit more hard but bettrer for my bike...

Get it up? In 3rd.
My girl can do that for me in any gear! Staing on the bike while she has me up is altogether another story!

I got knocked down, but i'll get up again and you'll never ever keep me down!
hi!
just a little story from this week end, i wanted to say...
A friend of mine with a 900cbr street, manage to leave the front up in 4th! i saw him doing it 3 times. one time giving a little clutch up.
we were 4 bikes doing a travel. we all didn't believe our eyes... with his girlfriend on the bike, has left up at around 160kmh (97mph) and he has done more than 2.5km (1.5miles!) at around 180kmh / 105mph. AMAZING!
Sure i won't manage it one day...

Heart stoppers
Is it just me that does these things by accident? Done loads of wheelies but never on purpose. The daft thing is, the idea of it scares me sh*tless! Looks great though and hats off to the guy on the Ninja on the way down to the BMF at Paddock Wood yesterday who pulled a brilliant one on the way off the lights in Tunbridge Wells. Think he was just saying hello!
I ride way too fast to worry about cholesterol.
