Info for SP1 and SP2 engines

Post by tony.mon »

I'm playing with the idea of trying a bit of tuning on my Storm engine, well, to be honest a spare I've just bought from Mark Hunt (cheers, Mark).

Wondering about a few mods, high comp pistons, re profiled cams and gas flowing the heads.

I know I can buy off the shelf high comp pistons, but this might be a cheaper option, if I can find an engine being broken. (I know, but I can try, can't I?)

The Storm compression is 9.4 to 1, piston diameter is 98mm. Anyone got a manual for 1 and 2 to let me know if a straight swap is likely to be possible?

Cams on a Storm are as follows:
I opens 20 BTDC
I closes 45 ABDC
lobe height 40.08 to 40.24
E opens 50 BBDC
E closes 5 ATDC
lobe height 40.23 to 40.39

So what's the equivalents for SP1 and 2?

From what I've read on here, it's the exhaust valve timing that holds the engine back, and that might well mean that I can get reasonable a power increase just getting the ex cams re profiled, and high comp pistons fitted.

God know how much this'll cost, but least I can gasflow the heads without spending any money.
It'll give me something to do until the weather improves......

Doh! just realised I need to factor Dyno time into the cost as well......
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I think read somewhere that there are only 4 engine parts shared with storm and sp's, not sure if its true or not but

SP pistons are 99.970-99.990 mm OD

I opens 20 BTDC
I closes 50 ABDC
lobe height 39.180-39.340
E opens 50 BBDC
E closes 20 ATDC
lobe height 38.730 - 38.890

Cheers
