Sounds like the starter leads on the way out,and probably the connection at the starter, get it stripped if you can,and replace cable annd connection bolt.Even better get a cheap starter off ebay, then when and if you need to strip the starter, you will have some replacement parts to make one good un.The finned type r+r is good,i fitted one to mine and its been good ever since.Had the smoking starter problem on mine, left me stranded,if it is bad you need to strip the starter, the bolt and plastic plate are probably shot at,its not difficult, and folk on here will help..

Well done, Sepia.
An hour for adjusting your CCT's now that they're manual?
Just do 'em yourself- you know how now!

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: new owner of vtr but problems since day one, help.
me again,lol.
had no trouble with bike all weekend.drove home from dundee to aberdeen this morning, boy was my fingers numb.was ment to be home tuesday but started snowing.back to my problem.
bike has been starting 1st time.got to my work today no problem.went out to start bike @ lunchtime & wouldnt start.was plenty of power in battery as had lots of shots trying to start it.starter was working ok.it just didnt sound like it was going to start.smelt a bit of petrol when 1st trying to start.
one of my customers @ work was passing & came in to see if got bike fixed(he was there last time it wouldnt start, lol).told him it wouldnt start.so he got the jump leads out & tried a few times & nothing, was turnning over with starter ok etc.yet again didnt sound like it would start.
was trying with my battery but it started going flat.the clicking noise from solenoid was normal then started clicking fast with nothing from starter.is that just the battery flat? causing that(just put battery on charge & is over 3 quaters power).
would the bike be flooded,if so after leaving it for 3hours would it still be flooded.
on scooter if it floods can clean spark plug or leave for 10mins then ok.
took out front spark plug looked ok,nothing out of the ordinery.
any ideas guys,if regulator was gone would that stop it from starting.as i said when parked up bike it was fine when switched her off.
sorry for the long story.
thanks steve.

Re: new owner of vtr but problems since day one, help.
nackered reg/rec would flatten the battery when it's parked up.
sounds like an ignition problem tbh if you can smell juice and it's not even trying to fire.
havent really looked at the wiring on these yet apart from lighting so maybe someone else can help better?
my cbx wont fire when the battery is flat - no power to the ignition box thingy, even if i try to jump it.
you should go for the yam reg rec as it sounds like it could be nacked, then mebe try to borrow a set of coils etc off someone local

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Try opening the fuel cap and closing it again before starting it.
Rich.

Had somthing like this hapen to me thing would not start and a strong smell of petrol flattened the batt trying to start the dam thing ,left it for a couple of days and tried again and only just managed to get it going but have never had it happen again . so no idea what it was but I think I flooded it

Re: new owner of vtr but problems since day one, help.
i cant see it being anything to bad as was running fine when stopped(not that id know if was running right or not).hoping it is just flooded.
been a lot of white smoke just when starting in the very cold, this normal?.seems to be ok once warmed up,then no smoke(a tiny bit if cold outside).
was a lot of salt/sand over front of engine with gritters out cause snow & ice.everything has white & brown crap over it.
my choke use to stay out itself about 3 quarters.but it has been going in itself of late.ive been holding it out if needed it.i think bike would of been warm enough after driving for an hour & trying to start 2hours later & the sun had been belting down on it.
trouble is bike is @ my work in a neighbours pathway.so cant even mess about with it & is a hassle for my m8 to get bike trailer to pick up for me.another m8 picked me up from work,he has a car size van might get in there but would be mostly on side & might not fit.
think will trade in for a push bike, lol.

Its a real bummer when the dam thing wont start i bet you wish u had got somthing else now but you will sort it out in the end as you can see from the forum none starting is a common problem .At least there is a great information base here and a load of great people willing to help . Hang in there dude

Re: new owner of vtr but problems since day one, help.
Starting these can be a bit of a black art and I reckon you've just flooded it. Its steam/vapour in the mornings I fancy, not smoke.
If I tried to start mine on full choke at the beginning she would flood. I turn her over a couple of times on the starter with no choke or throttle, then a third time whilst gently pulling out the choke until she fires.
In the early days I flooded her quite often till I got used to the above procedure!

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

thanks balls.
was choice between a vtr or yamaha fzr 600r,but couldnt get to see the yamaha cause of all the snow over xmas.all my m8s said go for vtr(i had my heart on the fzr600).wish i checked up on vtrs 1st.told the guy i needed something reliable to get me about for a few years & just had the money to buy 1 good bike & had to make a good choice.said bike was mechanicly sound.he only had it a month before selling again, did he have trouble with it?.
it could just start 1st time tomorrow, but im scared to drive incase it brakes down all the time.i bought a bike thinking id have trouble free biking.im learning fast tho, lol.
this site is very helpful & friendly, but the more i read problems the more i think i have them.misfires, pops under seat/tank when deceling, loseing power in rain(just hte once in a very wet/misty day),trouble starting etc,i have all them & i just dont have the bike knowledge.
steve.
ps ,stratman just read your bit on starting.i was doing the choke thing but it has been very cold last few months.since new starter i have been starting as you have.could be nothing much, but everytime i get it sorted & think alls ok sumit else happens.hope smoke is steam/vapour,it does pour out a lot, lol.
