i smell oil,

Post by seb421 »

this week i have ... (voice of Jesse's diet's Fast Show)

been smelling oil when i have been getting off the bike and at start up, also bike seem's to be a bit sorty of laggy if you will when given hard throttle almost like it thinks about it... thinks about it..... then gets going

what could it be that's causing this, its on 24,500 miles now.

Rings are a distinct possibility.
Or knackered valve guides/seals.
Lastly, check engine breathers are clear, into the airbox.
Is it using any oil?

Otherwise, a weep or leak, leaving oil on the engine or exhaust, getting hot and burning off? (although this would be unconnected with your laggy feeling).

But with the symptoms you describe, I'd be doing a compression test, (and then a wet test- that'll show up whether it's rings or valves).

Apparently you can get the big ends undone while the cases are still together, front one's fiddly, but possible. So you could fit new pistons and rings with the engine in the frame, although it's probably an easier job with it out.

Heads have to come off anyway, and then get to the big end bolts via the sump.

(Oh, one more: Have you got manual CCT's fitted? If too tight they could be holding the engine back and causing overheating....)
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

A silly question I know, have you got a scottoiler fitted?
I had mine turned up a bit too high, and oil splashed onto the hot rear downpipe and stank!!

Seb,
Another possibility is you doing to many wheelies, oil from the engine getting into the airbox.

If the smoke is blue then it's burning oil and most likely one of Tony's suggestions, but if it's only white smoke then most likely only condensation.
