Clunking noise.

Hello guys I've got a querie picked up my firestrom yesterday had a flooding issue yesterday and got it going behaved flawlessly all the way home.

Today after leaving her overnight she wouldn't start I tried and tried but woudnt have it the battery went flat got a battery booster and she fired up whilst warming the was a loud cluncking noise coming from the front happened twice bike stalled probs due to being cold stilll fired up no probs clunking noise dissapered flawless for half hour ride now warm do my shopping come out and she starts up no hassle. Then whilst in traffic one single clunk bike riding fine.

My mate with a carbaretor bandet says it's the carbs getting rid of excess fuel and air that's left from flooding earlier. What do u think.??

If petrol had flooded into the engine then the oil has thined out, the clunking could be the bearings running with no lubrication at startup, take off the oil filler cap and see what it smells like, any sign of a petrol smell replace the oil and filter.

Hmmmm hope not I'm think it's the fairings being a bit lose and cluncking the frame when she stutters.

noticed a lower fairing clip loose off mine, looks like it was put on wrong, probably by _unts.
the only clunk it makes it 1st to 2nd and back - drives me mad!

If I read your posts correctly, then the "clunk" happens as the bike stalls? Could it be backfiring/popping through the carbs, stalling the engine? If the carbs need setting up (again, thinking of the flooding problem) then this is even more likely???

That's what I was thinking, Poping back though the carb.
Very easy to flood a vtr in the cold. I would be going for some new plugs and a carb clean and ballance, if I've understood your description.

Lol I think u guys are right the last bike I had was an inline four and what happily sit in 6th at 1500rpm I'm now realizing how differnt a vtwin is to ride for example I had no probs with banging or clanking this morning and I think it was because I didn't once let her labour. Mayb I just need to learn to ride. Hope I don't need plugs was serviced on Saturday.

Carb balancing in a nutshell:
It's a pain at first, but you get used to it.

You'll need two gauges; dial type or vacuum tube type, both work fine.

Then you need to be able to find the vacuum take-off points, on the back of the heads behind the cylinders.
To get to these is quite a squeeze; that's why most people do the following mod-
Fit a permanent fitting on the take-off, and a short length of tube. Then blank off the end of the tube to seal the vacuum.

When you want to check/adjust the carb balance, just plug the gauges in. Much easier, but quite a bit of faffing about to fit the tubes first time out.

Now once your gauges are in place adjust the adjuster screw on the LH side of the carbs (you can just about get to it if you move the pipes leading to the thermostat housing) until they're within one mark of each other at about 2000-2500 rpm.

Unless you have a mate who can hold the throttle slightly open then turn the tickover up a bit to hold it at those revs.

You'll get quite quick after a few goes!

That's the noise I was on about Sometimes it feels like your knees get pushed apart. If you've just had it serviced you won't need another set of plugs, just get the carb ballance checked.
