Get a bar of ordinary bath soap and rub it on the alloy. Then heat the lever. When the soap blackens the alloy will be at the right temperature to be worked. Keep and eye on it (especially if you are using something like a MAPP torch), as the melting point of ally is very close to the temperature at which you can work the metal. Once the soap blacken, then no more heat!!!
