Hi guys
Just bought a 2000 w reg firestorm off my dads friend. It was last used on the road in 2005 and stored in his garage since then. The bike is in mint condition. When I picked it up I rode it home and it was lovely revved right out and nice and quick. The next day when I rode it it wouldn't run properly the whole time unless I had the choke out otherwise it would back fire and bog out???
I have rode it a few times since and it seems to be a ok a bit and then suddenly starts doing it again and when you rev it it won't rev right up.
All the times it has happened the weather has been chilly but this shouldn't happen should it?
Thanks

Bike Problems
2000 Firestorm
Re: Bike Problems
Have you had the air filter out? When were the plugs last changed and was it left with a tank full of petrol whilst being stood?
Does it sound like its coughing under the tank when you open the throttle?

SP1's rock!
Re: Bike Problems
If it was lasst ridden in 2005 the likelihood is that the carbs have a load of gunk in them as the fuel has evaporated and left deposits. I'd start by cleaning them thoroughly.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Since you have the bike has it been parked outside? The reason i ask is because since i have moved house i have to leave the storm outside and when the weather was bad my bike started doing this. Its almost like when you throttle on the engine wants to shut down, is this the same with you?
Mine has been ok now but if i leave it sat for a few days then it will do it.
I dont know why i ask this but do you use the choke when starting up? If so how long do you leave it on for?

Re: Bike Problems
Forgot to ask
When you park up after a ride do you let the engine run for abit? Reason i ask is because i live next to a long dual carrageway and i get home shut the bike down and thats it. If you just bought it and gave it abit to much throttle and like stratman said there may be fuel deposits left in the carbs which will burn up and confuse the fueling system abit thus more fuel passing through will cause more confusion.
My theory is i get home shut the bike down then there is excess fuel left in the carbs? Then start it up in the morning with the choke which is maybe clogging it all up. I now dont gun it as much before i get home and if i do i let it idle for a few minutes then in the morning i use the throttle to start it up for like 10 seconds and its been fine for the past few weeks
Hope this help abit after i have rattled on lol
I do struggle getting my words out!!

Re: Bike Problems
tbh i think it's cos the carb floats are set to a level when the bike is upright, not on it's side stand.
are the carbs keihin??? think they are with being honda??? not had them off so not sure, but i bet they have a horizontal pin that goes left to right through the float mounts.
i reckon it sticks cos it's on an angle with the bike on it's side stand and not upright.
but that should only matter when the bike is running seeing as it has a vacuum tap that only draws fuel when the engine is running....
which makes me think, on the bikes who are having this trouble, is the vac diaphragm fkt in the fuel tap, under the tank??
so it's either pissing fuel into a pot when it shouldn't be, or it isn't supplying enough when the engine is running???
i dont think there would be any other way of checking other than pulling off the fuel pipe and seeing if anything comes out with no vacuum, then suck on the vac pipe and see what happens....
i dont have this problem myself, just that a few people seem to have had the same issue, just wondering... yno

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Re: Bike Problems
seems honda did a product recall in 2008 for a fault on the fuel taps in some vtr1000fs
http://www.hoc.org.uk/help/Recall_CBF-VT-VTR-VTX.htm
you can check if yours was recalled and modified if it was affected by the fault:

just a long shot tbh but apart from it causing fuelling problems, we don't want a fire!
