I just picked up a larger oil cooler from a TRX450 (see pic) that I will eventually be fitting to my VTR. My goal is to fit in low in the front of the engine just above the filter.
The cooler came with the original lines which would seem to be the perfect length for this installation. The only problem is that that they no longer have the ends that bolt up to the engine cases. My question, then, is is it possible to fit the ends of the existing TRX cooler lines (chrome fitting; see pic in lower right) into the stock VTR lines where the chrome lines come in presently (see VTR line pic, middle left). In essence, I would be dismantling the stock line and simply replacing the chrome tube section wit the TRX lines. Is this possible? If not, I will likely just cut the stock braided line and the shoulder fitting off TRX450 line and simply slide the chrome tube into the VTR braided line, securing it all together with hose clamps.
The VTR runs hot stock (particularly at low speed, courtesy of the side-mounted rad design) and mine runs hotter yet (see mods). I will be replacing the stock slugs with high-comp JEs in the foreseeable future and want to ensure adequate cooling for the engine as it will generate substantially more heat (and power!!!!) then. I am currently running a cooler from a EX400 (same as SP-1) which has twice the cooling area (4 rows vs 2 stock). This new one has one more yet and the angled outlets are better set up to accommodate my planned mounting position. Plus, the price was right
FWIW, stock SV1000s use an oil cooler that is very similar to this one (in tesm of area), mounted in virtually the same location I am looking at using so I can`t be too far off the mark.....
Is she a track bike or road legal.. if so you coming to the storm weekend 2010, be good to trade notes cause I was looking at retro fitting another fan to the second rad to improve cooling, but of another oil cooler would help then I might consider this as an option..
Bike is road legal but I do hope to get some track days in. The only issue with attending the event is that I live across the Atlantic in a land-mass known as Canada
I will be parting with my existing cooler as soon as I get this one on (although the shipping may be steep if you`re interested). I had to have it modded to fit (have one inlet rotated 45 degrees by a radiator shop, plus cut and drill an aluminium bar at the top to line up the mounting holes) but it`s a straight bolt-on now.
Simplest way I can think of m8 is to take said rad and firestorm pipes along to a place that dose hydraulic hoses and ask them to change the fittings around should’t be no problem for them to do they’ll just cut off the crimp on the pipes and remove the connections then swop the around and re-crimp them
its big----- its red ------its throbbing and it’s a thousand CC
