Touring Tyres for an Sp 2

Post by Pete.L »

Okay folks, this is sticking in my craw a little just trying to say it. I can even feel a little vomit in the back of my throat but it has to be done :sad2
What's the best touring tyre for an SP?
There, I said it.
Anyone have any info on Bridgestones or the Perelli multi compounds or such like? Mike, didn't you try the Avon Storms? What was the front end feel like?
I need to find something which will get me to Italy and back and not dump me on my A$$ as soon as I get a little lively with the throttle or will melt the centre out of itself on the auto ban.
Any suggestions folks.

All solo bike tyres are touring tyres.

I tried different tyres on different bikes and stopped search after switching to Continental Road Attack back - Continental Sport Attack front.
Very confidence inspiring but at same time excellent wear resistance. And still "sharp" enough to enjoy corners. And very good in wet. I mean latest 2 versions of Attack type.
Even Trail Attack had left one of my Varadero-riding friends so impressed that he won't ever switch to any other type.

Got to agree with FSM-even though I've hardly been out on the SP in the grand scheme of things... but the Avons are very good so far

I keep thinking about trying some stickier for the summer but I never see the point tbh, well, not on the road anyway...plus they'll wear like feck on the SP :biggrin

How many miles are you looking to cover in a day Pete?

Pete just stick some sport rubber on. The way Dave and Timbo ride you wont be wearing wearing em out in a hurry! Still got my Racetecs on after the Scotland blast (sailed through mot).
Normally skin them in less than 1000 miles.

Seriously I would try the Storm STs or the new Pirellis (Stradas I think they are called)

Pilot Road 2CTs. They last and last and last. The rear on my Fireblade is just touching the wear strips in the centre (prays it goes through the MOT tomorrow), and there is over 5k miles on it. That's over 5000 miles, on a 150BHP bike    . I'm not a nutter on the road, but it does get ridden hard (and I'm a chunky bloke as well). They have loads of grip in the wet, warm up quickly and are still grippy enough for knee-down jappery.
The only drawback is that I find the front sidewall is quite stiff and might need a touch of compression backing off.

To put it into context, I used a Pilot Power rear in about 1200 miles. Scrubbbed Racetecs K2s last me about 900 miles.

Oh Man,
I think the problem now is, there is too much choice. I've just come off the Metzler site and thought "I'll buy the Road Tech Z 6 rear and stick to the Z3 front" (which has now been upgraded to the M5). Now I've been given all these choices.
So, Avons, Perellis, Contis. Thanks for the input guys, If I hadn't had such a bad experiance with the Avons front, I'd have some in a shot, Perelli 2CTs, my brother runs on his R6 and he's a track monster on them (the SP stays with him though  ). I keep hearing good things about the Contis, I've just not been brave enough to bit the bullet and fork out some cash to find out for myself.
Okay, lets flip this, who's had a bad experiance on what? Bad profile after a thousand miles, worn out the centre ect....and NO! before you start, we are not talking about old girlfriends :biggrin

Love Bridgestones but as Mike said they are skinned in about 1K (that includes 021's). Go with the Avon Storm ST's I have followed Mike on my Blade when he had em on the SP1. They are good when its dry he wasnt hanging about and carried some good lean angles. He says they are good in the wet as well. That would be my choice.

That's interesting about the Bridgestones, they would have been one of my first choices originally :eek2 Thanks Guys, It's always handy to have a second opinion.
Just got my MOT today so now it's time to go out and skin what's left of the Z3s on there now :D
Mind you, it was bloody cold this morning, I saw the temp gauge going back down to about 60 c when I hit the open road and it didn't come back up until I tucked in behind a van for five minutes :eek2
