Go Pro Camera???

Post by benny hedges »

anyone use one of these?
Image
where do you mount it for forward view?
i got the 5mp surf camera with grab bag of self adhesive mounts but cant find anywhere to mount it apart from the front mudguard.
dont want to stick it somewhere where it wont come off, or take a chunk of paint off, or fall off when i hit a pothole...
i can angle it up or down but not side to side or swivel.
don't really fancy sticking it to my new lid cos i'll look like a tit lol.
any suggestions welcome!
btw i have a black db so can't mount it behind the screen.

my mate uses one of these mounted to his helmet when he races moto-x

picture is very good and stable providing your not riding into the sun, it doesnt like that and poorley adjusts its contrast etc.

sound is good too.

I take it that’s the HD one as it has the rechargeable battery? Mine costs a fortune in batteries as you need to use lithium ones if you want it to run for more then 30mins.

I mount mine on my helmet (waiting for Timbo's comments) and although it does make you look like a tit, you don't actually see it yourself :)

I also mount it on my tank using the suction mount. (See pm) I then also tether it to my jacket by way of boot lace just in case the suction fails.

I wasted an adhesive mount by sticking one on the front mudguard. As the suspension dips, it touches the top of the camera which ain’t good. Maybe I could have mounted it further back, but I like to tether it to the bike somehow and the further away from centre you mount it, the longer the tether needs to be.

Nah. The casing makes it too big.

It actually works alot better in the sun than some other cameras I have used.

out of the case its tiny, about 15mm thick x 30mm tall x 45mm wide, but the sound is poo out of the plexiglass case and it's not waterproof.

geo, yup i was going to stick a mount on the mudguard but was bothered about it falling off or taking a chunk of paint off.
like you said i'd want to use the tether cos theyre not cheap!!

ive got a tiny MD90 cam as well
Image
it's even smaller than my c0ck - that would easy fit in the intake, but the sound is shite - all you can hear is wind and they film at like 5fps.
i stuck a rizzla over the mic and it was loads better, but the pic quality is nothing like the gopro.
if anyone is thinking of getting one (the md80 / 90) - id advise against it. theyre advertised as the dogs nads but in reality all theyre fit for is sticking to your shoe in the market ;) ;)

I Was looking at the Hero HD ones, which my brother recommends as he uses them Paragliding. He says they are "sick". He also mentioned battery hungry too...

This is another option I was thinking of...

It's not HD, which is only a benefit if you want to show it on an HD TV, otherwise for YouTUbe and the like, apparently HD is not required?

http://www.actioncameras.co.uk/X170

The above looks a little more sleek in shape (you'dl probably get that in the air intakes) and I like the screen for viewing the video. However, not sure of the sound, which the HERO makes a big deal of.

The HERO HD is expensive (300GBP), the non-HD one is a lot cheaper and the X170 is 200GBP... would like to try it.

Some more research is required me thinks...

no mate i dont belive so, he got it when they first came out around a few year ago, still wicked and it can cope with extreme weather dust and mud, my mate used to put vasaline around the seal of the case where it opens too.

i am on the market for a different one, preferably something people have used on bikes before.

Any recommendations?

the go pro surf is the third cam ive bought after the others failed to perform.
the sound is bob on with the go pro cos its encased so doesnt pick up wind, and there's loads of different mounts for em.
just ordered a suction mount for mine, and a clear screen so i can film the clocks and forward view.
tbh i dont think theres anything better.

looked at a few bullet type cams but same as you, didn't want to spend a fortune on something that is no good for bikes and high wind noise.
plus theres no indicator on the back to tell you you're recording.

the only thing that would come close imo is one like plod use, with a remote recorder - the cams are so small you can wear them on the lid without looking a berk.

might be an idea to youtube search for the cam you linked to and see if theres any good vids off one.
otherwise invest in a go pro.

only thing i dont like about mine is the fish eye lens.

also, the type of memory card you use makes a massive difference to the quality of the vid, with lesser cards having lower write times so you get jumpy framerates.
sandisk are best imo.

GoPro Motorsports Hero Wide

I paid £150 inc p+p

I have put a video together showing the different places I have mounted the GoPro camera on my bike. The video is a WMV file. Its 20mins long and is around 150mb. If you would like the link to it, PM me. I would post the link but concerned about bandwidth useage.

Note: This video does not demostrate the full quality of the camera. The raw version of a 20 minute video would be approximately 500mb

Looking at the GoPro Hero HD from the states. Costs $258 plus $45 P&P.

Just waiting for confirmation on one thing from him, then i am ordering.
I will get a HD one next. £197 is cheap. Let me know how that goes for you Timbo. Will he send it as a gift or is that the question you are awaiting the answer too?

The cheapest I have found a standalone one in the UK is about £230

Timbo wrote:Quite interested in this thread.

Recently bought an Oregon Scentific ATC5K, and it is sh1t. It is big so quite hard to mount (hoo hoo), the picture is grainy even before recoding, the sound is poop.

And the worst bit of all, the picture wobbles in time with the revs of the engine, terrible.
I almost bought the ATC5K but glad I didn't :)

A problem i have had with the non-HD Gopro is battery life. I eat through Lithium batteries like you wouldn't believe. As for alkaline ones, forget it unless you want to carry a pallet with you on your ride and stop every 30mins.

I can get between 2-3 hours life out of a set of Energizer Lithium batteries.

You however will face a different problem. The HD has a rechargable battery. Unless you can buy another and pre-charge it before setting off, you will only have the time avaiable on the one battery.

I've just bought myself a wee camera to have a crack at this filming lark. Didn't cost me £200 though

I'll report back when I've tried it.
