Advice needed please!

Post by chris1bev »

Hi Guys

I have put some Quills cans on my bike about 2 weeks ago, i'm finding that when im travelling at a constant speed usually in 2nd gear im getting like a farting/choking knock from what feels like the engine, it doesn't do it all the time but is slightly worrying considering it didnt do it with my standard exhausts on, infact it only started after i raised me exhausts of which i didn't use any link pipes for i just loosened the clamps and repositioned until they were raised enough and then tightened them back up, would this affect this were the connections are not 100%???

Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Chris, when you raised the cans, were they your Quill's or standard?

If it was the Quills, you may find the carbs need re-jetting as the back pressure will be much less through the quills so you jets will need to be changed to supply the correct amounts of fuel.

If it was the original can's, the only thing I can think of is where you've twisted the link pipes they are blowing so, again, you are getting a different amount of back pressure.

Quick trip to the bike shop for some advice, they may be able to tell you what jet you need, and then just a case of tank off, air box off, get to carbs, change jets, put back together :D

or you may have to have it 'set up'.

Sorry Steve but that's not how it works. Storms can be a bit of a bitch to set up right and off the self numbers just don't work. Don't get me wrong, I love your optimism, but I can garantee it's not that easy :wink2

Try a 0.5 mm washer under you're needles and see if it's better or worse :plainsmile

You can tell who's dads of young children being on a motorbike forum at 8am on a Sunday morning

I'd not risk riding it and put the originals back on until you can afford to get it sorted properly.

I'm going to have a go at twisting mine when I get time, like you did, I like that angle.

Chris i should think the bike will be fine, i ran it like that as you speak with the knock and with ill fitting link pipes etc for nealy 8,000 miles i have now fitted blue flames and the sh1t it used to do with the ill fitted pipes it doesnt do any more.

i just think its a fueling issue and also the fact that it will be blowing from your linkpipes now its not meeting coreclty now since the raise and it will also take air in through the join too cause ing it to pop alot on shut off.

If it's air getting in at the joins you should be able to hear the bike popping out of the exhausts as you slow down on the throttle in gear, especially form about 5,000 down to 2,000 in third or fourth.

You might also get impressive flames out the back at night!

If it's that, don't worry, ride it, and seal it with a bit of silicon gasket when you have a chance.

Just fitting less restrictive cans will cause the mixture to be out, but as Storms are not high-compression it'll take a long time at full throttle for that to end up as a hole burnt in the piston crown.

It won't be running as well as it could, but shouldn't prevent you from riding it around for now. But you'll need to get it on a Dyno and properly set up at some stage.
BTW, a freer-flowing air filter is also a good move, fit this before you get the dyno set-up done. The Dyno people will almost certainly recommend a Dynojet kit, or the Factory Pro equivalent, search for info on these in Workshop.

But depending on the cans you might get away with just needle height adjustment, maybe pilot jets or mains (or both) as well. Any decent Dyno shop should have these in stock, but check first.

No, they all cough occasionally, even when properly set up.

But nothing to worry about, unless it stalls as well, in which case turn up the idle to 1500.
