Bike not pulling properly at high revs

Post by chojindan »

Hi there - i'm new here

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a running problem I'm having with my storm?

Basically, it pulls fine up to about 5/6k, but past this is starts to "bog" down and become very hesitant and snatchy to the point where it's very hard to actually reach the redline. It doesn't matter whether the engine is warm or cold, the same thing happens.
The problem doesn't appear to happen when in neutral, only when in gear and accelerating.

I've checked the air filter and made sure it wasn't all clogged up (it's K&N) and as far as I could see the carbs are clean...

It has been been Dynojetted, probably tuned for use with the Micron cans which are no longer on the bike (it's new to me, and the guy who i bought it off sold them seperately).

Any help where as to where I should be looking would be much appreciated!

Cheers guys 8)

check main jets aren't blocked, carb diaphragms aren't split, carb balance...
have a look at the plugs and see if one is black as crouton

can't see it being ignition advance cos it's all electronic afaik...

Sounds like the classic cam timing 180 degrees out.

Search in workshop threads for Sirch's post on how the cam timing is set and checked.

Let us know how you get on.

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to it, and whilst i can do the basics (changing oil/filter etc) valve timing seems a little bit out of my league :?

bugger.

Ah well, thanks for the suggestions guys - looks like I'll have to pop it into a local honda garage

Check the vacuum hose on the fuel tap is NOT on the connection that's pointing towards the ground (when the tanks fitted). It should be on the connection that points towards the rear of the bike.

Good advice so far, certainly some things there worth checking.

It does sound like the valve timing is out by 180 degrees I agree. But after saying that, if you're running standard exhausts (can's) with the bike having been dyno jetted with as you mention Microns or similar, it might be an idea (if you can borrow or get your hands on some, or even buy some for keeps) to try a pair of free flowing can's before getting the valve timing checked. Also a K&N air filter won't work properly with the set up you have.
