Valve Clearances .......shock horror IL4

Post by bikerpiker »

Managed to avoid the 'Inlaws mothers day trip',this afternoon cos i'd been up since 4.30am ,and at work at 6am ,i told my wife i was too tired to go  ,so once my wife and daughters had left the house i popped out to the garage and stripped down my bike to do the valve clearances (Bandit 1200),i just got the cam cover loosened and it got very dull outside ,....no lecky in my garage , couldnt see properly ,so it'll wait till another day.

Anyway, the haynes manual is giving valve clearance tolerances as...

Inlet 0.10 to 0.15mm
Exhaust 0.18 to 0.23mm

Does this mean i'm looking to set them to around mid-limit ,ie Inlet around 0.12 mm , ..and Exhaust around 0.20mm ?

Cheers

get the feelers out then!!
i used to have some big long ones that were ace for tappets.
when they got bent i just trimmed a bit off the end.

why do you want to set them btw?? are they rattling?
if you ride it hard / hot, you might want to go for the upper end of the scale rather than the middle imo.might save you burning an exhaust valve.

just had a google and in suzuki manual it quotes same gap for inlet and exhaust depending on year :

Gsx 1100 F 87-96 IN and EX 0.10-0.15 mm

Gsxr 1100 86-88 IN and EX 0.10-0.15 mm

Gsxr 1100 89-91 and Bandit IN 0.10-0.15 mm
EX 0.18-0.23 mm

Gsxr 92 IN 0.10-0.20mm
EX 0.15-0.25mm

It's a 2002 GSF 1200 bandit mate.
Nope ,they are not too noisy ,but i think ,iirc ,valve clearances were due at 8k miles ,it's done 10k miles now ,so thought it would be worthwhile checking them.
The bike had stamped FSH 'till i bought it last year with 7.5k miles showing.
Low miles i know ,....but when i balanced the carbs a few weeks back ,they were quite a bit out ,so even with the low miles i figured i might check the valve clearances :)
Also changed the plugs and gave it an oil and filter change .
