SP Clutch Slip pt II

Post by Pete.L »

Mid summer last year I started to get a little clutch slip in top gear. I messed around a bit, cleaned up the clutch rod, bled the fluids and finally settled on some tougher clutch springs. Job sorted
or so I thought :wtf:
Out giving the old girl a shake down and starting prep for Mugello and low and behold it comes back
Now it only happens at over 135 so why bother I hear you asking. The truth is I want it to be right and the last thing I want is to be left at the bottom of the Alps watching Dave and Tim disappearing off into the sunset, eyes glued to the next apex without me.
So today we played "Undress the lady"

Not much going on in there!
Found the inside and the outside plates to be as bald as a babies behind

What they should look like

Must admit, I'm a little embarrassed to have to admit to shagging a clutch. Most of my bikes have had double the mileage of this one and never have I had any clutch problems. Hell, I don't even use it half the time 8O
Oh Well! She's got her cloths back on now so all I need do is find a dry spot between the showers and give her a proper test
My new ride is a bit of a Howler and I love to make her Squeal

did mine on the cbx750 a few weeks ago, found the same wear on the friction plates.
got a new set from silvers for 35 notes.
gearchanging had got a bit knocky and if i gave it a fistfull in 3rd/4th it slipped like a nun's gusset.

took a hr to fix, didn't even need to drop the oil, just leant it right over against the wall.
massive improvement and pulls like crouton now

What do you put that down to Pete, inferior clutch plates or oil contamination :?:

That's what I was getting but only in top.
I didn't have to drop the oil either, just left it on the side stand. Obviously designed with the need of a quick clutch change on the starting line befor a race :cool2

Chris, don't know what to put it down to :? Did I just have a bad one? Is it a bit on the week side because it's lightweight for racing? Or am I turning into a girl and don't know how to use the clutch properly (Pete now ducks  )

I still haven't fully tested it yet and the biting point feels all wrong to me so there may even be another underlying problem somewhere. I've stripped it back out this afternoon and I'm currently soaking the friction plates in oil overnight as I should have done and I've also had apart the slave unit and push rod just to be sure.
We'll see what tomorrow brings :D

might just be with years of slightly slipping it in town traffic???
easy job tho, hopefully it's nothing else.
looks a bit offside on the pic tho - it's not just worn on one side is it????
wonder if sumat might be bent?

Yeah those pictures are a little deceptive. They give a distorted view of the plates, probably cause of my crap photographic skills :biggrin
I put the plates back in last night after 24hr soak in oil and it feels much better now. Only managed a quick spin around the block but it feels pretty sorted. I not sure if one of the plates was sticking or the judder springs weren't seated correctly or the soak has conditioned the plates and they now work as they should. The results what count so I'm happy for the moment, I've just got to book a little time on my private test track, then I'll be properly happy  :shh: :shh:
