Exhaust markings need them or not?

Post by Styler4077 »

Had a look over the www and it looks as if you do not need any markings on your replacement exhausts.
The vipers I have have a sticker on them but no markings.
In may 2009 the requirement for markings on exhausts for MOT's was removed. The MOT guy can fail it for the excessive noise, leaks, damage and or bad fitting. Not for no markings.
However MAG states that all exhausts must have markings.....
Others state that small exhaust manufacturers can bypass this requirement due to their low volume output.

So, you don't want to mark something up yourself (Setting your self up for a possible perverting the course of justice) Sticky labels, hummm, PC Plod with thinks you have made them up yourself (My Vipers come with sticky labels :(
ebay guy is selling metal straps with the right marking on them, but again a possible perverting the course of justice.
Viper baffles are "e" marked but will be inside the exhaust...

Think I will leave the cans as they are and see if I get stopped. The question is does anyone here have the definitive answer?

is a grey area tbh and i think it's down to the individual plod and how much of a cocky git you are lol.
you don't want to get checked with some stamped up 'not for road use'
once got pulled on the way back from a high speed run back from wales, baffle had blown out of one expanny pipe so i wasn't going mad in case i holed a piston, but got stopped just as i came off the 62 at warrington.
the nobhead stuck 2 fingers in the exhaust to check for baffles - what a satisfying sizzle it made :biggrin :biggrin
Mmmmmmmmm Bacon!!!!!
i got fined for defective silencer.
i dont think he wouldve bothered only i wouldnt take my helmet off cos i'd had a pint or 2
and gave him loads of abuse for calling my gf a biker slag.
out of order imfo.
that was like 20yr ago tho - things are a bit different now!
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

I look at this way-

Ride like a rock and you’re going to draw attention to yourself anyway. Whether you have E marked cans, race cans, pop cans or WD40 cans-plod will do you for something. Having cans illegally marked or none marked just gives them another thing to do you on. If the bikes a shitter and not correctly maintained you'll fall at that hurdle too :)

As regards MOT-I've never had any issues and my Buell had a race can on. That was marked not for road use. Believe me that was loud!!! It just comes down to the "digression" of your tester.

The Microns currently on my SP are a bit of an enigma...

They are marked up with BSAU 193a or an E mark (can't remember which...) but also have "NOT FOR ROAD USE" stamped on the underside of the outlets? Very odd. The sound nice though :D
Not that I'm really bothered either way tbh...

My mot tester will not pass any bike with the "not for road use" stamped on them. But he does pass bikes without any markings.

I think you want to rectify those marking JB, if you get pulled with both it looks like you've been tinkering, if you get my drift

Yeah-that was my only concern Chris. I was going to have them polished out when I went for my link pipes making (the NFRU markings) but totally forgot.

Looks like I'll have to order a polishing kit and do it myself. I think I'm due to do a Bike Safe course with the Police in a few months so it might be an idea :)

You don't necessarily need a polishing kit. Some wet and dry, then Autosol to finish off works apparently :biggrin

Hi Jb - my cans aren't marked and have a couple of wee holes where a 'Not for road use' badge might possibly have been once, who knows
When I did the BikeSafe course in the autumn, I asked some of the police guys what their thoughts were. They had a look & a listen and agreed that only a real jobsworth would take issue - as you say, best not to give them an excuse to go looking for things to have you on.

JB, when I first got my vtr, it had stainless Microns on it, with 'not for road use' engraved under the outlet spouts and some clumsy bugger had got a bit carried away with the dremel and belgom.
What could I do? :wink2
