Water Leak

Post by bogof »

Changed the clutch cover on my bike today. Didn't have a replacement so I reused the rubber ring seal for the water pump.

Unfortunately it didn't seat properly so when I tightened everything it got trapped and has cut the ring. So it will no longer seal :(

Is there anything else I could use to replace or supplement the ring until I can get a replacement?

whereabouts do you live m8???

i use a place called EAP in bury for o rings and seals, but any Eriks, wyco or bearing dealer should be able to help you out.
or a honda stealer...

I'm in Kent. Will try Honda dealer but worried that it may not be a stock item, and I need to use the bike on Monday

if it's just an o ring, just go to the nearest bearing supplier, bsl or bearing power or sumat.
even if they don't have the right size they will sell you a o ring splicing kit so you can make one of any size.

you could just go the scrapyard and find a bigger o ring of the same diameter and carefully cut it to size and splice it with superglue.
it will work ok.

Thanks for the suggestion. Problem is that this is a big O ring, about 6" circumference at a guess.

If you look here http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com ... A=366&B=11 it's Part No 5, listed as a gasket although it's actually a rubber ring.

I always use a belt and braces approach, and use silicon sealant as well as the o-ring gasket.

The only thing to watch is the small gallery where any leakage past the impeller seal runs out through the small 90 degree pipe (if it's still there- they sometimes fall out) at the front of that gasket area.
So you have to use sealant sparingly in that area and wait for it to nearly dry before assembling.

Personally, I'd take my chances with just sealant and whatever o-ring is still useable while the correct part is on order.
Better that than miss the Easter runs, if it's not raining where you are :D
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

That's exactly the sort of answer I was hoping for, as I'm planning on getting through the tunnel to Southend on Monday with my sons, so thanks :D

Off to Kent Motorcycles shortly to see if they have one in stock.

If not it's B&Q for some bathroom sealant
