Benefits of a 190

Post by matt1966 »

Hi all
Got my Storm a few weeks ago, when I bought it, it was fitted with a 190 Maxxis on the rear. Are there any benefits to this wider section tyre, any views on this.
Matt.

Can of worms this one...

Personally I'd say no. Never really see the point or benefit (apart from showing off at the pub) of fitting an oversized tyre to a bike/rim specified to run a smaller/certain section tyre. You’re just going to alter the profile of the tyre and handling characteristics of the bike in a more negative way imo. I know some lads who track there bikes argue differently.

Personally, I just stick to what it says on the tin  I know some lads who used to run a smaller sections (180) on there TL's but that's because it benefited the handling and many found the Suzuki did'nt suit a 190. Even though it ran a 6 inch rim. That said, I had a 190 on my TL and it used to catch the chain slightly...

The choice is yours :)

dunno if others will agree, but imo the benefit of fitting a wider tyre is it looks better.
i've always felt better cornering with a narrower rear tyre tbh, definately wants to lean in quicker with less effort with the smaller radius tyre.
matter of opinion i spose.

Ok I think when the time comes I will be putting 180 on. BTW I asked a mate if he could think of reason why someone would put on a 190 all he said was he probably had a small chipolata lol. Thanks for the input

I tried a 190/50 on the stock 5.5 inch rim and did not care for what it did to the handling (slowed it down mid-corner). However, I have a 6 inch PVM rear rim on now (actually, it will be back on again very soon as it is getitng some attention at thte moment) and I will be mounting a 190/55 to see how it works.

For the stock rim, get a 180, it handles better, costs less, and is lighter to boot.
