fuel tap f!*k wit

Post by firestorm jedi »

OK I feel stupid for having to ask this but I've taken my tank off for it to be resprayed (now done and looks very nice, thanks) and now it's time for the tank to go back on I realise that i didn't mark the position of the fuel tap bofore closing it. :Ball Kick:
I do remember that it was flush side down ie Off is at the top and on at the bottom. The top half of the tap stands proud to the tap whilst the other sits flush(ish). Where does it need to be??? Thanks and sorry. F'storm Jedi

that's in the OFF position - hth?
i can't take the tap off to get a better pic cos theres 10L of fuel still in the tank!
thought - doc said i can't drink beer - didn't say anything about petrol :biggrin

oddly, the 19L tank i just got does not have a tap as such, just a vac operated valve :confused

thanks very much for that Mr.Hedges. I think I understand (!?). I assume it has to be fully round the other way and not just somewhere in the middle.......? thanks for taking the time to do that though, much appreciated.

no probs at all m8, got my tank off atm, well everything lol.
wasnt sure if you meant you'd took the tap apart inside or what - you sorted it then??

if youre still not sure, suck gently on the vac tube and get someone to blow down one of the fuel lines - if they can blow through them the tap is in the open position.
that pic is in the fully OFF position, to open it, turn it the other way til it stops, then it's fully OPEN

(waits for timbo to make a purile comment lol............ :silent: )
might be worth swilling a few litres of fresh fuel round the tank before you fit it just incase theres any crap inside - also that will prove if the tap is open, once you suck the vac pipe.

and don't fit it (imo) if the new paint still has a smell to it cos it hasn't cured properly yet.

pics of paintjob????

I was trying to work this out a while back.

Tried both extremes, then found that the bike would only run right with the tap set in the middle.
Still don't know if this is correct, but it runs fine.....

Well took my tank off for the first time last week, following the instructions in the pukka Honda Workshop manual. No mention at all of turning the fuel tap off. Took off all the pipes, lifted it off (half full of juice) no petrol came out. Wasn't until I saw the guy I bought it from on Sunday and told him yep had tank off, bugger of a job to get off and he mentioned - you did turn the fuel tap off didn't you? Fuel tap says I? So gets home and the fuel tap NOW is like it shows in the piccies above. But oddly enough if I turn it the other way (to how it was when I took the tank off) nothing comes out. Bike ran fine with tap this way (can't say if it will or will not now as have not yet refitted the tank).

SO now I'm confused - turning the tap either way results in no motion lotion coming out.... 8O

Ah well.......worry about that when I get it all back together I guess................ :eek2

well at least you know your vacuum valve diaphragm is ok!!!
no fuel will come out until you apply vacuum to the thin pipe. then it sucks on a diaphragm and allows a little valve to open, and fuel to flow.

when you hit the starter and the engine starts to turn over, it creates a vaccum in the inlet rubbers and that operates both the fuel tap and the carb diaphragms (that help lift the throttle slides) - and works your scottoiler if you have one.

no fuel came out when you removed the tank because the engine wasn't running and so no vaccum was present, and the diaphragm valve was closed.

so if you've turned the tap the other way expecting fuel to come out, you need to put it back where it was otherwise when you fit it and try to start it, it won't run ;)

tony, i would say your fuel tap diaphragm is fkt or sticking, vac tube perished or trapped, because i'm sure the middle position is 'prime' though it doesn't say that on the tap.
awkward bugger to get at innit without hinging the tank up!!

another possibility is that you may have put the vacuum tube on the wrong stub when you last had the tank off?

Jeepers, I appear to have started something here!!! Just about to go and fit it now, after I've chomped my way through my bacon buttie.
Once done and running (fingers crossed) i will then attempt to put pictures on here as i have also just fitted a Pyramid belly pan. This might get messy...... I'm hoping for :D  and not :Argue 1: though I fear the latter...... I'll be back. Thanks once again.

Vac pipes are correct, I've done that though- just like everyone else  :D Once bitten, careful every time thereafter.....
Prime is an interesting thought, as fuel doesn't flow in the middle position either until a vac is present- weird, huh?

Whatever, it runs fine in that setting, so I'll leave it alone.
At least that way I'll know if a float is sticking, as fuel will run out under the bike!

Bloody awkward to get at right enough, if you don't use the little hex u-device in the toolkit, but after you've done it a few times you can go by feel from under the front end.

("Ooh er, missus" opportunity, there for anyone desperate).

There's a fuel tap on E-Blag for about £7 last time I looked.

OK so all done having utilised pliars and hair gel (no really) but to deepen the fuel tap mystery mine only works right with the tap at 90 degrees clockwise of Benny hedges photo. I THINK that i may have a 16l tank and thereby wonder if each is different..... Bikes a '98 R so maybe they were different dependant on the year of bike too.....? Anywho, she's now finished and for my final trick I will attempt to put piccies on here. Never done it before so if the site burns down don't blame me. :shifty:

I have it in media player. I've seen the post of how to by yourself and the other literate folk. Makes no sense to me. I really have no idea when it comes to computers..... Never mind.

You won't be able to just enclose your picture in mediaplayer in the [img] or [url] brackets.

You'll need to put it onto Photobucket or a similar program first, as the picture is then on the Photobucket server and is always available to be seen, so you can link to it.

You can't do this with your own pc because you turn it off sometimes.

Create a username/profile on Photobucket and follow the instructions to upload your photo from your own Mediaplayer, then you can post a link to it on this or any other forum.
