Come on then you electrical wizards..

Post by tony.mon »

So I've stripped down the combined tail/stop/indicator LED tail light, because some of the LEDs aren't lighting.

Because there are two sides, I can compare one side's readings to the other, and have found that a transistor is outputting a lower voltage than the other one, resulting in one side being dimmer than the other, and when the indicator is put on for the dimmer side the red LED's go out, when they should stay on.
I've swapped them over and YES! the fault changes sides, so I'm sure that it's this component that's producing the problem.

It's a transistor, ("d" shaped in cross-section) marked:
UTC
HE8050L
D TEA

And it's got three legs.

My question is, where on earth can I get one?
Or, what should I ask for, because Maplins and RS don't give anything when searched for this info.
:confused
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Your lights are counting down - step carefully away from the lights or throw them in a bucket of water and run

Hiya

I could be wide of the mark here, but the UTC HE8050 is a low voltage high current small signal NPN
transistor.Try the link and see if you can see what it is you need, but I would have thought it would a specialist part and you may need to take it to a bike place and see what they make of it or know where you can source one.
https://www.sierraic.com/pnresults.asp? ... on1=Search ...Hope this kind of helps, but doubt it..

Best go now as need a lie down before my brain bursts pm..   !!

Its a 25V 1.5A NPN transistor in a TO92 package as mentioned above but not a specialised part so Maplins or RS will have an equivalent that will suit

Datasheet is here - http://www.unisonic.com.tw/datasheet/HE8050.pdf

There you go! Done. I saw the Unisonic on a different link. At least now you can get it ordered!

should be able to get them anywhere tbh - here's a datasheet on them:

try progressive radio in liverpool - i use them for most components and they've never let me down
77-79 Dale Street
Liverpool L2 2HT
0151 236 0982

there's another place in bolton but fkt if i can remember the name of it---- just over the road from maccys .
i'll see if my m8 google knows.
if they havent got it they will order it.
the bird behind the counter is ace at finding obscure components.
don't be doubting the skills cos she's got tits - she is the best lol!

there - that was easy!!

Thanks, all.
Impressive amount of knowledge out there, quite remarkable the vibration and fear hasn't knocked it all out of us :D

I'll pop along to Maplins and have a chat.

I'll stick with mechanicals, methinks.......if it's broken, you can see it, hear it, or it falls off :D

(and Fritz- I only changed the rear light because I got fed up with bulbs blowing every week or so. And now look- the bloody LED lights have failed after only four years).

I had a chat with RS, who said this might do:
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/sear ... &x=32&y=13

Is the base emitter voltage ok, as the other one was reading 9-11V output?

yr help appreciated, as I'm an electronics know-nothing :confused

ring rs technical on 01536 201 201 and ask them to find you a direct replacement for the part you have.
i wouldn't fit anything else than original tbh.
ring modern radio tbh, you're looking at about 80p max i'd say.
