pilot screw setting

pilot screw setting

On vtr 1000, changing back from open cans& dyno jet kit, what are the stock carb settings?, thanks.

Standard settings are:
Pilot (V models) 45
Pilot (W, X and Y models) 48

Main (front cylinder) 175
Rear cylinder 178

Jet needle (front) A1UD
Jet needle (rear) A1UC

This info is taken from front of Haynes manual and assumes that the bike isn't mostly being used above 2000M.

and although it's difficult to get factory settings for the mixture screws, it's around 2 to 2 1/2 turns out as a starting point, but really needs a dyno run to set properly, quite possible to get different settings front to rear.

But don't throw away your DJ kit and race cans, someone will have it off you.

You'll probably change your mind anyway, once you've ridden it :D

Great, thats some good info- the open cans were removed from the bike, but they left the DJ needles.I have obtained some stock needles & pipes so will dial in the carbs to suit. cheers Tim
( I'm using the stock gear so as to be easy on my ears, when doing a long trip down through France later this summer )

Once you're over ninety you can't hear the exhausts, and anyway, that's what earplugs are for!

But most of the noise is intake noise- can't quieten that, unless anyone has a good idea?

Tim , that's race pipe settings :lol:
If you're putting on std pipes, filters and needles start with the front at 1minute 20 secs from fully closed and the rear at 1minute 40 seconds. ( 1 minute = 1 full turn).
the rear runs a little hotter than the front so it is normally set a little richer to cool it down.

As I said, couldn't find standard pilot screw settings, got this bit of info from the Superhawk forum.
But could be because of the K+N....either way, best to get them checked on a Dyno for correct fuelling accuracy.

I've been searching for info, no luck re; Dyno jet kits,
The main jets are changed & needles & small hole drilled in slide, are the springs changed as well? nothing else is there?
I've rebuilt this VTR & have used a TL1000R front forks & ducati 900ss front wheel, I must say I'm very pleased with it- i thought I'd mention it as I've not seen one with those Suzuki forks! Is the cheap upgrade for the rear shox?

The springs remain the same, however you can put 170 DJ main jets in as thats the recommendation for standard exhausts with K&N OR standard filter.

i got new springs in my dj kit - shorter and lighter than standard.
on top of that i got a load of assorted jet sizes, plus the new needles (both same) and new shims and washers for on top of the circlip.
the standard jets i took out were 175 & 178.
mixture screw was 1 1/4 turns on the front & back.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Was yours a US kit then as the European kit doesn't have replacement springs!

er was the E1185, which i assume is Euro1185 - though i did get it from usa
bargain price as well btw - £40 from jcmotors.com

how the crouton do you get the standard springs back in lol, theyr about a foot long!

Ahhhh then you have the US version, Euro version is E1185.002 :P

I didnt have any trouble getting the springs back in, must have the 'magic touch' :wink:

I use a ten inch screw driver. Push the spring down over the screwdriver, point the end of the screwdriver down inside the carb top and release the spring.
Now the tricky bit, push all of the spring down in and whilst holding it in with your fingers, remove the screwdriver. Now quickly get the two halves together keeping the diaphragm in place and not twanging the spring across the room :lol: I find lifting the slide at the same time makes getting the diaphragm alignment easier and make sure you can reach the carb top screws and a screwdriver cause you cant let go until you get it battened down :wink:

Pilot settings are 1 5/8 turned out. Any higher than that and your bike must be running extremely lean. Its not 2 and a half like most bikes, only 1 and 5/8ths.
