VTR running temperature
VTR running temperature
Hi guys,
Can I get some feedback on what temperature your VTR runs at on average ? I realise that different conditions will yield different results, but i've noticed that my VTR runs, at the very minimum, above 95 degrees. Usually 103 ish if im stopped and then it might cool to 97 if i'm running and this seems to happen regardless of the weather.
I'm asking because I've noticed that the previous owner has stuck a K&N filter in and also bashed out the baffles in the stock exhausts (wasnt expecting that !) so I'm worried that its running lean now and running hot ?
Thanks alot !

Re: VTR running temperature
they do get hot quick in traffic m8, check the fan cuts in & out and make sure the rads are clean & not choked with crap.
temps sound about right to me tbh but i just go off the gauge.
was considering adding a 2nd fan on the left rad tho cos i reckon it's going to be a scorcher this summer
if it's got a k&n and debaffled pipes it should have a dynojet kit really, or at least bigger mains & an extra shim under the needles.
might be wort checking if one has been fitted, if you can't ask the previous owner.
if you need to buy one, have a look at http://www.jcmotors.com
their price is £40 whereas in the uk you will pay over 70 quid.
it's kit number E1185 - don't order online, ring or use the online support and haggle over postage

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Re: VTR running temperature
Under normal running my R6 gauge shows an average of 84C rising to 101C when stationary when the fan kicks in, ok a set of R6 gauges on the storm is not "normal" anyway but the Honda temp sensor and the Yamaha sensor specs are very similar (within a few percent) to make the reading quite accurate.

I had an 02 storm, the fan would kick in when in traffic at 105 and cool to 100 before switching off, it's common to be in the mid 90's on a normal run in the summer and high 80's to low 90's in cold weather.

mine runs between 1/4 and 1/2 on the temp gauge, and gets hot quick in traffic, fan kicks in just over the 1/2 mark. I presume from your mail that you have a 2001 or later with the LCD display, I just have needle.

Thanks for the replies.
I do have a post 01 model ( 03 to be exact).
Its possible the previous owner put a jet kit in, he did a lot of stuff to the bike.
My other bike, an R6 runs around the 80 mark, as does my mates R1, 95 just seemed hot to me for normal ( less than 25 degrees) weather ?

Re: VTR running temperature
Hi everyone,
back after a year away - nearly!
Hmm, seems like I'm the other way around and now I'm wondering if mine's ok?!
Hardly moves off the bottom marker and makes it's way (quickly) up to half in traffic.
I'm doing 12000 miles a year now commuting from Bristol to Luton.. M4 and "just" above the speed limit keeps the temp guage low!

Hi, Gary.
Doesn't sound too far out, have you drained and replaced coolant lately?

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: VTR running temperature
No I haven't, its full and clean though.
It was replaced by the dealer about four months ago.
I pulled a spark plug out after a 70km ride on the weekend, its looked like this

It looks ok to me, perhaps a little lean but not terribly. Mind you this is after riding of all speeds, i should probably crank the throttle, kill the engine and pull the plug then for a better look.

Re: VTR running temperature
tbh bud you would want a good 500 miles to see proper deposits on the plugs - 70km you won't see anything unless it is running very rich.
sounds to me like the temps you see are normal - and the rapid heating in traffic.
as long as the fan cuts in & out it's fine.
note though that the gauge only shows coolant temp - not engine temp.
just do the usual and make sure the coolers are clean, coolant and oil levels ok.
it's just a characteristic of the bike - but imo it would benefit from a 2nd fan...

I know this thread's is a few months old but was searching about it as mine only goes to 1/4 when moving (no idea what that is in degrees). The other day when stuck in traffic it went to half way but didn't go higher as I starting going again. So how close to the red will it go till the fan kicks in

sounds pretty normal. mine cuts in just after it gets to the halfway mark.
the older i get,the faster i was

Re: VTR running temperature
Also depends on the age of your oils as it thins it will get hotter.
