Sounding bad?

Post by seb421 »

Monday to Friday bike has been a star pulled hard and sounded like a twin should

Friday night I filled up around 3am on the way home at a garage in leyland, rode home at a gentle pace with all the police and piss heads about.

not touched the bike all weekend as ive been away

Monday night i get in the garage ignition on, choke out, turn it over.... immedialty that hearty throb from the exhausts sounds different.

sat on it and walked it down the driveway (its steep) looking back to avoid the car at the side front wheel locks bike slids out to the side and goes down on its left side again (in slow motion)

gear lever is sheered off, had to ride it 20 mile with no gear lever end, what a nightmare that was!

so on the ride the bike feels different engine wise, and sounds different from the exhaust, the engine sounds a lout louder and a little tinny or rattly? cant really explain it :( bounced it off the rev limiter a few times to see it it would clear it, it didn't... took it down the motorway on the way home around 100 ish hoping that would sort it... got off the motorway and it was still sh1t

is it possible the fuel is a bit crap? or could it be something more sinister? are the CCT's on the way out again?

when the bike is revved the engine is now making a distinct rattle, im hoping that if i empty the tank and go get some more petrol it may cure it, just hoping they fuel in possibly doesn't have the octane it should

the bikes just had new spark plugs (iridium NGK) new oil, new oil filter and new air filter two weeks ago.

any one any ideas or experienced anything like this?

Fuel could possiblyt be off, but that doesn't happen very often these days due to the volumes being pumped out of petrol station tanks and into cars- it doesn't stay there long enough.

So for peace of mind you need to lift the tank off, airbox off and check the spring in both CCT's- particularly front one.

If they're ok:
If you've just dropped it sometimes a bit of grit or a piece of gasket gets into the jets.

Try draining and refiling the tank with some fresh stuff, just to rule this out.

Don't run it until you've checked the CCT's.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

cheers Tony, fingers crossed it is just ill fuel

its wasn't right before it toppled over (well fell very slowly on its side) noticed the difference soon as I fired it up in the garage.

unfortunately I dont have the time to strip it down and inspect stuff as it has to be used every day and night, I have ordered some bits from Dave Silvers again now

and hope to fit Manuel APE tensioners this time round,

warmed up the bike today Tony and between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm at sort of flat spot has suddenly arrived, this is noticed when in neutral and revving it there is was seems to be a slight bog, wondering if that after market filter hasn't sealed or seated properly, and its either allowing to much air flow, or it has possibly sucked some sh1t in?

one thing after another!

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

PMSL, 10/10

Tank off, airbox off is a ten minute job, 8mm bolt on ends of CCT's and you can stick a small screwdriver in.

But if you've warmed it up and it's not sounding as though someone's emptied their toolbox into the engine then it doesn't seem to be CCT's.
Maybe vacuum leak, carb diaphragm, carb not seated properly on inlet rubber?

Tony Ran I rode the bike till the relight came on tonight and then a bit beyond that, filled it up at Texaco and its now running a lot better and the flat spot and bogging appears to have gone :) don't think ill be filling up in a back and beyond dingy garage again.

the exhaust note noise is coming from the right rear can, I had removed the baffles other day to see what the blue flames sounded like with out them and the neighbours response was you can wombles right off not putting up with that again at 3am! so back in they went...

may have put them in at a slight angle and think its possibly touching the wall of the inside of the can, the rattle stops when i block off the right can with the hand and starts again when its unblocked so will removed the baffles again and re-fit

the last time i did the CCT's I fooked the bike up, so might well leave that alone or for d.hill to sort out again if the problem persists

and in response too Benny the CCT's was changed at 15,000 ish mark last year and its rapidly approaching 30,000 now so don't want to chance it and thinking that manuals will save hassle in the future

You cant possibly mess up your bike by removing the bolt in the middle of the CCT (plunger bolt) and placing a screwdriver in, only small mind like a watch screwdriver. hold it, then rev, if the CCT has worn a ratchet tooth then it will turn the screwdriver and you need to replace it.
