Starter Motor Terminal

Well I'm heading off to the Northwest 200 early tomorrow morn and was just giving the bike a once over.

Eventually got round to looking at the starter motor terminal to grease it up (as suggested on here) and well..... f*ck me is it just about corroded away to nothing.

My Dilema.....

If I take the starter motor out is it the sort of thing that can be repaired by stripping and putting a new bolt in it with washers (General ones I will have in the garage) or does it need to be a specific terminal bolt & washers

Or

Do i clean, pack with copper grease and hope it lasts till I get back.

Advice or help much appreciated

I wouldn't use copper grease myself - vaseline would be better.

you canot buy the proper terminal bolt anywhere i tried so i used a normal bolt with rubber washers never had any trouble with mine since i also used copper slip to keep things clean and rust free

You can also buy the insulator rings from Halfrauds, they do a little packet for a couple of pounds.
Or make something from a clipped-off bit of aquarium tubing.

I made a bolt out of a greenhouse bolt, it had a square head which was designed to slip into the channels in some aluminium greenhouses.
Filed it to rectangular, and away we do go.

Managed to Strip down the starter motor last night, took it all apart and cleaned the internals and checked the bushes. Both nuts and washers were totally gone as was one of the insulating washers. Rethreaded the bolt and put an additional o-ring on as well as new nuts and washers. All cleaned and bearing greased too. All back together greased up and tested. Job done.
