bad news - compaq are shite lol pound to a penny its the mobo is goosed.
good news, argos doing msi notebooks cheap. highly recommended piece of kit.
if it was a dear one maybe claim on house insurance, drop it in the bath or summat first so its proper fkt.

Buy an external drive to back up those important files before it all goes TU and you pay the nose for somebody else to remove old HD and do it for you - then compare the cost of repairing to simply replacing.

I recommend a mac - good as new with warranty

Your netbook is currently just about worth something between this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Compaq-Evo-N1050v ... 500wt_1182

and this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Compaq-Laptop-Evo ... 500wt_1182

How much money do you want to throw at it to fix it? £100 - £200?

for a cheap fix give this a try, paste is around 5 quid

get your self some thermal paste from scan

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/5g-Akasa ... usspreader

remove the screws on the back of the laptop (underneath) look for the processor unit remove this, (should have a fan on top of it) carefully clean the thermal paste from both and reapply a new paste, not to much that its going to go everywhere just a even spread on the contact area between the two

now while you have the case open get an old make-up brush or similar off the misses and try clean out as much shite and dust as possible from all areas especially fans and there surrounds.

fit back together and fingers crossed its a gudden.

old laptops and desktops often have trouble with overheating issues due to dust/ poor air flow/ more demanding use of newer applications, and also if they haven't been used in a long time the thermal paste can really harden up

this method has worked for me on a number of old lappy's I've acquired and sold on
