Carbs popping? Any ideas why?

Post by Buckers »

Hello

Just getting to know my new storm. Lovely thing when you get to learn how to use it properly. Much better in traffic than I anticipated

But I've noticed that after a surge in acceleration, then ease off, or sometimes just sat at the lights, the carbs make a popping sound. It's like a mini explosion and I feel it right through the tank.

Is it because the engine is warm? Do they all do it? Are the carbs out or the fuelling too rich? Doesn't bother me really but it doesn't feel like the bike likes it

They do all do it but making sure your carbs are balanced helps a lot. I just did mine at the weekend using a 15 quid balancing gauge from ebay and it has been reduced a lot and bike runs much more smoothly now too. Sounds like yours might well need doing..

either that or a previous owner bent a few inlet valves????
hopefully not like, they all pop a bit...
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Don't wind him up, Benny

They all do this; nothing to worry about.
Carb balance as suggested will reduce it, also raise tickover to 1350-1400- this stops them stalling at the first tee-junction of the day, too.

Mine doesn't do it since I fitted a -4 degree Factory Pro ignition advancer, but that's not necessary, a bit overkill unless you want one anyway.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

-4??? was that a typo?
i have a +4 to fit when i get back in uk....
do you notice the flat-spot in the middle or is that something you can work round?

dirty air filter could also cause the popping as it would make you run over-rich - worth having a look at it's condition before you balance carbs.

I see what you mean, standard timing is 15 degrees before top dead centre, and the FP advancer takes that to 19 before. So fires 4 degrees before the standard one.

As far as I know FP don't do one to make the ig timing any later than it is as standard, wouldn't be much advantage to it......
