Bit Concerned ?

Post by pariah »

Whislt over visiting my parents the other week, the oil filter strangly developed a small hole in it and decided to pump oil out with out my knowing.
I managed to get a new one and due to the fact that I hadn,t lost much oil ( maybe 1lt or so. no oil light came on though.) I bought new oil and topped it up.
No I thought it was my imagination, but on the way home she seemed to be grumbly and kick out more vibes through the foot rests.
Again just got back from parents and she still feel the same. Feels really rough and viby , especially in low pulling off.
Never felt like this before, so I,m wondering if any thing has happened inside that would cause this. ? Nothing else has changed with her.
Any Ideas on this, should I take her and get her checked over just to be on the safe side.

Sounds like you've knocked out the big ends or main bearings. Try draining the oil and check for metal swarf etc.

yup mains would sound rumbly especially pulling up a hill in high gear, any load.
you feel it through the pegs.
i lost the butt end on my cbx and after pricing up a rebuild i just got a used engine and swapped it out.

also may have damaged the cams, as they are at the top end and tend to be the first thing to suffer from oil starvation.
then there's the gearbox and selector drum etc

bad news tbh, you might be looking at a few bob there m8 - seriously consider looking for a new motor on ebay.
you could make ££ back by parting your old one and selling off the starter, clutch, cyl heads etc - make 200 easy i'd say.

Hold on, there :eek2 :eek2

Losing less than a litre isn't going to cause main or big end failure, unless you ran it under load and high revs for quite a while, and if the oil pressure dropped far enough to allow accelerated wear the light would come on.

You need to test is whether the low oil pressure light is operating normally, does the bulb illuminate when the engine's turned off after a few minutes with the ignition turned on?
If so, I don't think you have any cause to worry.

I'd say keep riding, see how an oil and filter change go. But you should check the old oil for signs of metal swarf/damage- don't worry about tiny flecks, but any bigger bits are a cause for concern.

(On the other hand, if you now want to sell your old "knackered" engine for 50p, let me know).
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I was in a town centre when I think it first started so only low speeds, wasnt far to my parents so I,m thinking it wasnt for to long before stoping. Only noticed it when it ran out of the lower belly pan onto the drive.
It was a sunny day so I couldnt be honest and say if the light came on or not, plus wasnt looking for the light anyway. :redface
Just done a 300 mile round trip and shes not used any oil. The light goes out straight away after starting.
Maybe I should get it checked over by my local mechanic who knows storms .

Well me mechanic has been and had a look, not to good by the sounds of it. he can feel bad vibes through pegs when reved around 2k mark and also hears slight noise.

Options..... :confused
Renew oil with 15/40 , bit thicker might help.
Keep riding it and monitor it.
Source another engine,( If can be trusted) repairing would cost to much...
Last option, trade it in before gets to bad. Get Rid of my Storm dont think I could part with her now. What else would I consider riding . :wtf: :wtf:

Any other ideas chaps.

No, they go "rattle rattle rattle"

I had a replacement engine from a breakers in mine - still not sure it was totally necessary but in fact had less miles than the original one and it has been fine

Depends what's gone, really.
I had something similar once and it turned out to be the big crankcase bearing behind the clutch.
Once it finally let go it caused too much damage to be reliably repaired, so that's now a spare engine for parts etc.

But it could be a gearbox shaft output bearing, for instance- that's easily replaced without removing the engine, as I recall.

Seems to me that you should keep riding it but look out for a cheap known good engine- trouble is that it might be almost anything, and without a proper engine-out stripdown you can't easily tell, until whatever's complaining gives up and it all becomes very obvious. :eek2 8O

So no continental trips, trackdays or Ring thrashes for now......

Not wanting to be a circling vulture or anything but I have a good VTR engine that I could be persuades to part with it for the right amount
About 26K on it
Had it in my VTR when I was looking for some new crank cases to rebuild the original engine
It ran nice and smooth with no nasty noises and had about 26K on it don’t need it now the storm has gone and it’s a big lump to have in the shed
And before any one can add it

Well it’s been offered to someone now so I’ll give it a week if there’s no reply then I’m open to offers on it
Comes with starter, coler pipes, cooler and speed sencer

But let me say I paid near £400 for it before I get any daft offers for it
