airbox stacks????

Post by benny hedges »

airbox stacks?
one short, one long as standard
2 short
2 long
custom billet stacks....

what do you reckon is best for fast road riding?
i know what i prefer... running 2 short stacks the bike raced to the redline with no mid loss, seemed a lot more torquey higher up the rev range.

fitted 2 long ( as recommended by RD) and tbh it felt smoother (a lot smoother) but totally flat in contrast to the 2 shorts.
wondering if anyone has experimented with this and what they prefer.
not interested in meaningless dyno figures, just butt dyno
no point (imo) adding an extra 2hp at the redline if it takes forever to get there or leaves a hole in the middle.
i found 2 short standard stacks made the bike rev harder, want to rev higher, seemed much more aggressive and felt faster.

i got mine (set of 1 short, 1 long) off ebay for a fiver btw

mmmh - looking at this atm... billet short velocity stacks, hc pistons and cams  £

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honda VTR 1000 Velocity Stacks
Velocity Stacks for VTR 1000 are machined from solid billet alloy and increase engine power by 2-1/2 horsepower (as per illustration). The stacks attach in the same method as the original equipment with no modifications required.

*factory pro & moriwaki do similar items too, with similar claims...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honda VTR 1000 Engine Performance Kit
Image
Piston Kit:

The VTR 1000 piston kit has a compression ratio of 11.6:1 and is designed to the same standards as the original piston which means you do not have to run extra piston to bore clearances. Pistons come with circlips, rings, gudgeon pins and includes new head gaskets.

Camshafts:
The VTR 1000 camshafts are designed to the same specifications as original equipment thus maintaining compatibility with the remaining camgear. These camshafts have the same base circular diameter as the original camshafts however lift and duration has been increased.

Following is a horsepower and torque graph with HPower camshafts and pistons installed showing a significant improvement over a standard VTR1000 Firestorm.

*next dilemma is whether to do this to my original engine, or a spare one...

Ahead of you., mate- played with long vs short a while back, checked on dyno too.
I prefer the two longs, as I ride mine using the grunt out of corners and fairly seldom trying to get an extra 2 mph top end.
But then I don't do track days ( drags trip excepted) so it's more for local street riding.

I found that when these were changed it needed to be set up on a dyno again, so maybe that's why you didn't get much from the two longs you tried.

Definitely after a set of machined ones, but I'd have to get a see-through tank and airbox lid to show 'em off

Unless you could get some that poke through the tank......now there's a thought.......

I bought a spare engine to do the work on, means I've always got a running bike for whenever I feel like going out, or for parts.

Cams are off being re-profiled, so they'll be in fairly shortly, after the engine has been in and taken for its first set of baseline dyno runs; then another dyno run after the cams are in.

Next, engine out again to fit the hi-comp's, lastly smoothing/gasflowing the heads and measure again.

Let's make it a competition, biggest BHP gain gets a pint off the other one!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Have a look at the Superhawk forum. There is a chap making copies of the long HPower stacks. Having led the charge to have a (first) batch built last year, I can state unequivocally that they work, and very well at that. One forum member from Sweden, who has his own dyno, reported gains of 5 hp in the mid-range (once re-jetted; they cause the engine to run rich due to improved airflow, need to lean it out a bit). They are currently taking orders for the new batch to be built by a chap who owns a shop in the US. Price is right and performance is impressive.

cheers

P.S. I have been running mine for a years now and LOVE them (wakes the bike up very nicely)

looking in the car shop before i noticed some nice shiny 48mm bellmouths for a fiver a piece - considering chopping some down short as possible and quicksteeling them to the base off my spare std ones...
the std shorts are still 2" high, compared the the billet ones on sale, are less than a inch tall...
