Brakes are spongy - pls help

Post by Buckers »

Hi

The storm is all washed, polished and lubed for the cadwell track day on Weds. Can't wait to really push her and see what happens, especially as the new Roadsmarts feel great.

Thing is - the brakes have recently felt 'spongy' on the initial pull, which goes away as I brake harder. The spongy feel goes if I pump the brake but it soon returns. Does this mean the brakes need bleeding? They have normal strength, and have braided hoses.

Cheers

When was the last time you bled them or changed the fluid?

Might also be worth just dropping the calipers off and checking that the pistons all move ok. Might be a slightly gummed up piston perhaps.

Of the 2, does sound like there is a bit of air in the system, would suggest bleed again, if it then goes but returns later, sounds like one of the seals is letting in a bit of air, poss in master cylinder.

yup - air that is.
try just slightly undoing the bleed nipple on each caliper a touch as you slowly pull the lever, tightening it back up before you release it.
sounds like its only slightly aired.
might be worth completely changing the fluid before your big day, rather than stuff it in the bales 8O
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Hmmm - brakes might not have been done for awhile. I've not done them since I got the bike a few months ago - so it might be a year or two. Track day is tomorrow so might have to put up with them, unless there is a handy sort at the track..

I put a Fireblade master cyl on mine - loads better, if nothing else, they bleed to a hard lever straight away...
