sp1 exhaust system question

Post by taffr »

noticed on quite a few sp1's that the original standard system does not hold a fresh new look for long, mine looks like its just come off a thirty year old ford escort thats been left at the bottom of the garden for the last 25 years, i've had a look around and can't find a replacement stainless item, does anyone have a pointers on who does them, i'm running quill cans, i've found them for the firestorm but none for the sp,

cheers graham

is it just the sleeves that have gone or the pipes themselves?
in the dodgydealers section theres a link to pj engineering who can supply new sleeves in carbon, ally, stainless and titanium - should freshen them up without breaking the bank.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Are you meaning the headers?
There's not many suppliers about anymore. Akro & micron used to do them but I'm not sure if they still do. The original headers are stainless, poor quality stainless, but they will handle a good wire wooling and then a polish. You'll have to keep on top of them and repeat a few time throughout the year but they will look quite respectable for a bit.
If you mean silencers, you're not looking hard enough  Google is your friend

sorry lads for the confusing first post, yes its the headers i'm looking for in stainless, got a mail from quill today saying they still have the tooling for the sp1 as they used to make them, but would need to make 6 to 8 sets to make it pay and they would be around £450-£500 per set, could be done in around six weeks, so i'll mail a few more companies and get something sorted in the winter

You could always try Sandy Bike Spares. I've used their stainless stuff on my Suzuki GSX1400, its well made, good quality and they use proper stainless steel.

Contact direct, 01767 682231 or see their kit on eBay, item: 150456224752
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VTR1000-VTR-1000- ... 2307e3cbf0

And less than £200....(postage excepted, but a lot cheaper than the £500 you've been quoted)

You'd have to check if they fitted the SP1, but they do do for a variety of machines - maybe they might want to model a system on yours if they don't do the SP1 system - could be a lot cheaper....

Update: Just checked their website; They don't do them for the SP-1 at present, (so the ones on eBay must be for the 1000F) but I would suggest still calling them, they are very very helpful people indeed, I've used them for a number of parts for my Suzuki, and the service has been excellent. As I say they may perhaps model a set on your current headers, thus you may get at a good price - worth a call anyway IMO

Agreed FSM.

I wouldn't use Quill tbh-I know a guy that was trying to sell a FULL Akro set on another website for about the same price as that quote.

As regards Quill-can't comment on many other bikes, but the Buell exhausts they made were terrible. I heard of more than a dosen blowing to bits on Mways, tracks, roads etc...they were utter shite. All had minimal mileage on them too.

Exhaust specialist is your best bet

cheers again for the advice, i've tried sandy bike spares on sat, no go, i've found a stainless builder from down south, they do custom stuff for plant machinery and cars and they have said they will look into it if i can supply a set of genuine honda headers for them to make a jig, so i'm on the lookout for a second hand set now or i will wait til the winter and whip mine of to see what they come up with, if it works out i'll get some extra knocked up

Don't get them to copy standard ones, get them to copy Moriwaki or Akra ones, and we'll all have a set off you.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
