Track day report and problems...

Post by Buckers »

The two go together like chips and gravy don't they?

Had a lovely sunny day at Cadwell on the storm. The bike performed well given its stock, on roadsmarts (very good by the way - they have beaded right to the edge on front and rear). Good little wheelies over the mountain - best bike I've had for that.

Anyhows, I had an intermittent fuelling problem which blunted me a bit. On park straight, hitting about 120-130 and going to the limiter each gear, I then lost power like the bike was being starved of fuel. The bike was struggling to get past 5k revs and was really chuggy. Then it might clear a bit, then chug, for about a quarter of a lap. Then it would be fine.

It didn't do it at all providing I didn't go to the redline. Can anyone suggest why this was? AA suggested fuel was vapourising
:eh:

yup, your bike is guzzling fuel faster than gravity can deliver it down the 8mm hoses.
looks like the ones with 19L tank have wider fuel pipes??? the ones on my new tank were 10mm anyway.
i have had the exact same problem myself and it's only when caning the nackers off it full bore at top whack, redline in every gear etc...

i changed the fuel lines for 12mm pipe but then thought theres no point seeing as the inlet to the carb is 8mm.
the cbr pump (or any fuel pump tbh) is the way to go.
i got one off ebay for £12 and just got another nice neat volvo one for 20 - looks well better :D
not sure if it's still there, but on the front page there was a how-to on installing the pump

riing the bike hard won't hurt it btw... the engine is designed that way. if it wasnt safe to rev it that hard the redline and limiter would be set lower.
mine hits the limiter at about 10k and wont rev any higher but that's near 170 anyway lol
(well, 170 on the clock, which is probably 120 in the real world!)

Hi there, this normally happens when going around the corner as the gravity fed petrol really has a problem flowing down when leant over. So the problem was when you were going around the corner before the straight and then when on the straight you used up all the fuel before if could drip down due to gravity. Good work! ;-)

The fix is a CBR 600 pre 99 fuel pump. this is the one you want. A Fireblade doesn't work, but if the pump looks like this (also found on a some CBR400's though) then it'll work (this one looks quite old though - they are generally reliable but you need to take the cap off and check how rusty the contacts are).

Fitting is easy. As far as the petrol flow goes, you need some pipe and a couple of T connectors. Two pipes from teh fuel tap, into one, into the IN of the fuel pump. One pipe out, T connector, then two out into each carb. Tuck it all out of the way and I've cabled tied the fuel pump to the frame. It's a good idea to add a QR clip too...

The pump needs an electric supply that only comes on when the ignition is on. Find one and connect it up being sure to connect it the right way around. If it is the wrong way around, then it will blow instead of suck, simply change the wires around.

When you turn the ignition on, the pump will tick until it's full of fuel.

good luck

doesnt have to be a cbr fule pump tbh, or even a bike one.
currently i am running a pentax pump off a volvo - good enough to supply a 2.5L engine at 20mpg lol so cant see me having any fuel starvation issues with that!

also just got this one for the princely sum of £1.45 brand new  looks great and should piss the job.

what make is that pump benny?
and how big is it?

I might need to fit one to my storm :S

The previous owner had race cans fitted, and has had the stock honda restrictors in the intake removed, and then jetted to suit...

having a few problems at the moment, might be just the fuel tap diaphragm but might need a fuel pump as well...

If that Volvo one works then well done. The problem of a newer CBR pump is that it provides too much fuel, over flowing the float bowls.

Good luck

seems ok tbh, just make sure you get a low pressure fuel pump and not a high pressure one intended for fi
when i tested it off the bike i thought thats no fkin good, its only a trickle, i can piss faster then that.... but it works even if its upside down, which is a bonus for me with my record lol
