REG/REC OVERCHARGING

Post by tattoo »

after replacing my reg/rec with a new one a few weeks ago last night it started to overcharge putting 15vlts into the battry,i also noticed it was very very hot too,i've been told that the overheating is a common problem leading to failure...is it possible to relocate the reg/rec so it gets good airflow over it?...also it's started to spitback thro the carbs...any ideas on either of these problems??

What type of R/R did you replace it with? if you got one with fins [new Honda, or any R6 R1 yam] it is unusual that it should fail again, especially so soon. That might suggest that the R?R is not the fault.

If you did use another old VTR part, then that might explain the repeat failure, but I wouldnt be sure.

As for the temperature of the R/R when it is running, define very very hot? even with the R6 reg fitted to mine, you cant hold your hand on it, but that would only be about 40 or 50C [if you want I could take a temp reading and be more specific]. If yours is much hotter than that I would worry that it is being over worked and go back to the 1st comment that perhaps the R/R is not the primary fault.

yes you can relocate the r/r if you want - make sure you use thick enough wire tho.
most rectifiers etc will run 70c without problems.
just wondering if you wired it right if it is a yam one?
i got a later honda one off a blackbird (handa cb1100, not beyonce) and it just plugs straight in, no messin. twich the size with hefty heatsink fins.

the best place to fit it i'd imagine is inside the fairing where the dummy air ducts point cool air...

spitting back, make sure there are no air leaks around the carb rubbers, get them nice & tight with a 8mm socket.
then think about balancing them...

i replaced it with the honda finned one but after showing a mate it he produced one from a honda varadero 125 and the v storm which are identical to the one i fitted,he said it could just be a faulty one so we tested the alternetor and drop tested the battry but both were fine,it says in the manual that altho the r/r might test good it would be best to fit a new one...

all this happed after i repaired the damage from the front cct failing, especially it starting to spit back thro the carbs

sounds like the temp of the r/r is ok but i've got a spare seat pod and i'm looking at cutting ducts into it to keep it alittle cooler.

any bent valves?? if you replaced them did you lap them in proper?
are you 100% sure you didnt time one (inlet) cam one tooth out?
or one cylinder 180 degrees out?

that wouldnt affect your charging obviously but could be the cause of the spitting back.
but if you've done the cct repair you will have had the carbs off so id say 1st job is to balance them...

what's the idle like? stable or all over the place?

it bent two exhaust valve which wasn't a shock tbh as it sounded like a dumper when the cct went(low speed)..valves are lapped in,new stem seals and guides just to be on the safe side...did a solvent check to make sure and no leaks...the timings been checked and double checked,it runs perfectly and idles steady at 1000rpm,it's just this overcharging problem thats got me baffled..the r/r is only about 4/5 weeks old and shouldn't be faulty.

i'll check the carbs are tight and have them balanced.

Charging between 13.5 - 15.5 volts with the headlight on hi-beam at 5,000rpm is what the Honda Shop manual say is acceptable.

If you had the carbs off a balance might help as Benny mentions. Another thing, if you removed the TPS (throttle position Sensor) plug from the carbs did you remember to replace it :?:

Yeah i've checked tps is fitted, took it for a run and it only spit back once,it did however only do 50miles to the full tank at a steady 70mph lol...i refitted the old faulty r/r and run it for 5 mins then refitted the new one and it seems to of settled down and reading 14.4vts charge but still i'm fitting a new battry and r/r...i have changed the dash bulbs back from blue to clear tho...maybe these were at fault altho they were a lower wattage than the originals...
