Hello all, just got myself a lovely firestorm, was on holiday at the time so ended up riding ir for the first time round Cadwell at a trackday I had booked! lol
Anywho it was ace, rode spot on, but to get it feeling a bit better we Richard about with the suspension, but now im riding on the road its awful! So im after putting it back to std, Ive got the settings which is great, but I dont know which is which?
The front Ive sorted, but the rear I dont know, there are 2 screws on the bottom of the shock, 1 either side, which is which? Also the pre-load should be position 2 of 7, but which end is number 2, the end which is higher or the lower bit if ya get me?
Thought id ask if anyone has any settings I could try for a 10st rider?
Tyre pressures Ive been told should be 36 front and 42 rear, is this right?
And lastly CCT's, im on 17k miles at the mo, is it worth replacing them now before something goes tits up or do I have some miles left?
Much appreciated
Chris
New Owner with a Q's???
Re: New Owner with a Q's???
Chris,
if it is stock Showa shock with the yellow spring, there should only be one screw on the bottom of the shock. that should be for rebound damping.
there should be some set up guides on here, but with the std spring and your 10stone weight, you will never get it to work, it is massivly over sprung [and under damped].
Good news is that I have a WP shock wich will be on sale as soon as my new Nitron unit turns up, and it is sprung for my weight which is 11stone [but just under 13 in full riding kit].........not that I am trying to sell or anything.
The front end is actually the weaker link on the storm, it is undersprung and under damped, so most people fix that first, but at 10st, it may be only needs the damping sorted with new oil to work for you.

Re: New Owner with a Q's???
progressive springs front & back will sort it out for less than you think.
i love the cornering on mine now but still havent fitted the rear spring.
i got the fork springs from wemoto and the rear yacugar from ftr suspension on 01284 752102.
very helpfull chaps and they can give realistic advice on what you need.
i can imagine at 10 stone you bounce about a fair bit! mine sits down ok but im nearer 14st lol
i put wirth prog springs in the front and dropped the forks by 12mm (cos im a short butt!) and it definately isn't an effort to corner now
i took the spacer out from under the back as well and prefer it without tbh, the way it is...
simplest mod on the storm is drop the forks so they stick out 10-12mm above the bars, and whack a 3-6mm spacer under the top rear shock mount.
if you want a spacer pm me
or a scale drawing and you can make your own.
by contrast, i had a ride on tony.mon's at weekend and the difference was incredible - his has been set up by pros i suspect, with a rather expensive looking shock at the back with adjustable everything.
totally different to ride than mine and took a bit of getting used to, but after 10 miles i was lobbing it into bends to see how it behaved and can say i was impressed - and yes tony, i slowed down for the stoppie signal (safety camera!) hidden in the bushes - fkin hope you did on mine lol
depends how much you want to spend on suspension mods tbh - you can go mad if you have lots of wad to spend.
tyres also make a massive difference to the handling, though everyone has their own preference.
i'm currently running maxxis m6029 front & back & i absolutely love them!
£127 for a pair from http://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/ - or ring them and mention rock radio in mcr and get another 25% off. mine came the next day too.
re the cct - your gamble. theres loads of storms out there running standard auto tensioners with no problems - new standard ones are £32 each from http://www.davidsilverspares.com or pm rider on a storm and ask for some of his excellent TT tensioners.
theres loads of posts here with different options, like the very simple 'stopper mod' to stop the standards retracting fully if (when) they fail.... or bazza can convert your standard ones into manuals for a few £ and a bj
entirely up to you, but so many have been wrecked with ccts failing....
whatever you decide, make sure you follow sirch's excellent idiotproof fitting guide in the workshop forum - and while you're there, download a free workshop manual & get to know the bike intimately

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

and I just stuck on a Hagon remote- about £400 now, and it's got WP progressives with 7.5 wt oil, as far as I can remember it's a 145mm air gap.
And a 6mm spacer.
Nothing special, but it seems to work ok.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Funny, don't remember a bush near a 40 limit.....
And I wasn't in the country anyway, I have a friend who's willing to swear I was in Ireland visiting some relatives.
Only messing. yes, I saw it.
