i have a spare icm & i think kemics has one on ebay very cheapo 

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Hi, have you checked your link pipes and silencer ? A broken baffle or obstruction can cause wierd problems.

Before it all started, the rev counter was quite jumpy/erratic at high revs, the day before the 5000prm misfire started the headlight died, and now, the Trip meter resets itself every time the ignition is withced off...just weird..It has to be electrical somewhere somehow

i dont know much.but i had a lot of trouble electrical with mine.
one time i was in the rain & it wouldnt go over the revs that you are saying.
also had no sparks,flat batteries every day.
my problem was water in the wiring loom.water had been dripping in from snow,rain & maybe getting washed to much.
it was going in through where the indicator/headlight switches was.disconected the wiring loom from there to behind the dials & the water poured out.
not saying thats your problem but anything is possible.my problem baffled a few on here & turned out to be something simple.

thanks Steve, but it is bone dry here no rain since March.
however, I did experience cut-outs during the summer rain. I would stop the bike and a few mins later it will fire up, and a few kms down the line it will cut out again.
And I am sure this is related to my current problem.

same happend to mine in the rain.
took me over 4hours to go 30miles.stopping & starting every 2mile or so.it wouldnt rev over 3000 & just seemed to go on 1 cylinder.
the rain was prob running in where there was already a build up of water.
hope you get it sorted.

When I got the bike 2 years ago, the Honda rectifier died within a few days.
Somewhere on the web I learnt that the R1/R6 is the best replacement, and I followed the supplied instructions to install this rectifier.
Last nite I was browsing the wiring diagram for the 10th time, and I noticed, that from the negative connector on the rectifier, there is a wire going to the negative of the battery. This seemed strange, as there is an earth already, where the rectifier is bolted onto the frame.
I cut the wire at the negative connector and removed it from the neg. on the battery...
Started the bike, and it is 100%, the rpm needle is smooth again, the trip meter functions, and the bike goes like a raped ape....
Why this worked ok for 2 years, and caused a problem now, I dunno.
I measured the rectifier at idle and up through therevs, and it stays at 14.1v.
So I ordered a new unit, at great expense from Yamaha, will collect it tomorrow, but after a nice ride tonite, it seems that it is money wasted, but anyway, one has to pay upfront before they order from the warehouse, so I will keep it as a spare.
Thanks to all of you that offered advice, it just goes to show that more often than not it is the simple things that cause all the drama.

Well, there you go, Percy Verance strikes again.
Expect you have already, but check round the mounting points on the R/R and make sure your'e getting a good electrical connection- maybe some of that heatsink paste you can get for underneath PC processors?
(actually- don't know if that stuff is electrically conductive, as well as heat- better check first).

Hi Tony, Yeah it is a mystery, as the wire from the neg Rectifier spade, to the batt neg was always there, and the bike functioned in that way for 2yrs.
When I measure the batt Volts at idle and higher revs I get 13.6V. Installed the new rectifier and still get 13.6V.
I dunno if that is sufficient, and I am still searching as there is probably still an underlying problem somewhere.

13.6 will be fine, that'll charge your battery well enough.
On mine I get 14. something for a short (no pun intended) while after starting, then settles down to 13.4 or so when running normally.
I'd guess this will be reinstating the charge I just used cranking the motor over.

I saw your post at the time you posted it but, thought I'd give it sometime to see if you came back to tell us it wasn't the problem. So hopefully that must have been it

It still seems a strange/weird one to me as well but, if it's cured it then who am I to argue

However, I still notice the rpm needle jumping at around 7000rpm onwards, and over the last few days there seems to be a intermittent misfire at around 8000-9000rpm.
I am sure that somewhere there is a earth causing the problem, just dunno where it is hiding as I have been through the bike so many times, and found nothing.

if it'sinterfering with the speedo, tacho and ignition it has to be the 16 pin connector on the icm i'd say...
very easy to get wet back there though i doubt you see much rain!
